Here is the easiest possible crocheted free pattern for beginners. Using only a single crochet stitch, learn how to crochet by making a Single Crochet Face Scrubbie Cotton Pad.  Based on single crochets, it allows you to practice the most basic crochet stitch – the single crochet.

single crochet only face cotton scrubbie pad

Finished size:

3 1/4″x 3 1/4″ (8.5 x 8.5 cm) square

The pattern is written in US Terms.

Materials you will need:

  • 100 % Cotton yarn in any yarn weights (a small amount will do). I used a worsted weight yarn (medium size 4).
  • Crochet hook (read the yarn label for info on which crochet hook size to choose)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

Ch = Chain

Sc = Single Crochet

St = Stitch

Sts = Stitches

How to make a Single Crochet Face Scrubbie Cotton Pad Step by Step:

Foundation:

  1. Start with a slip knot on your crochet hook. If you don’t know how to make one, you can find a tutorial on our YouTube channel
  2. Make ch 11.

Row 1:

Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook (it will be the 10th chain you make). Sc in each chain. (You will get 10 sc in a row, as we needed 1 additional chain to make a sts).

Row 2 – 10:

ch 1 and turn. Make sc in each chain (10 sc in a row). Repeat 8 times, to get 10 rows in total.

A pink crocheted Single Crochet Face Scrubbie on top of a white cloth.Border (Edge)

To give your pad a pro look, I recommend you to finish your project with the simple edging. To do that, simply continue with single crochet stitches on each side of the pad. In each corner, make two sc stitches.

Finish off:

Leave 3″ of the yarn end and cut off the rest. Yarn over and pull through. Pull the hook out.

Pull the yarn to tighten the knot. Weave in the ends.

Congratulations, you have just made your first crochet project! Keep practicing by making a few more  Single Crochet Face Scrubbie Cotton Pads in various colors.

Crochet afghans are a beloved and classic way to to make your rooms more cozy and warm. After all, they are not only a snug wrap for a chilly evening, but also a striking, decorative touch that will draw the eye and start conversations.

While a beginner may find them intimidating, you will do well with two things, some basic skills and patience.

Let us take you on an afghan-making journey. We’ll begin with selecting the right materials and guide you all the way through to the finishing touches.

Afghans and crochet blankets, which is which?

The word ‘afghan’ originally referred to a type of woollen blanket that was produced in Afghanistan and exported to other parts of the world. Over time, the term was used more widely to refer to any type of crocheted or knitted blanket that typically features geometric patterns or motifs.

Today, however, these terms are used somewhat exchangeably, and we can say that all afghans are blankets, but not all blanket are afghans.

yarn

How to Crochet a Afghan

Here is a list of steps for making any afghan or blanket:

    1. Choose a pattern. There are plenty of wonderful free crochet afghan patterns at any skill level. The one for you is out there. I guarantee it!
    2. Gather your supplies. The yarn and crochet hook sizes are usually given in the pattern you choose. You will often need scissors and stitch markers.
    3. Start to crochet! Follow the instructions carefully, but don’t be overwhelmed. In no time flat, you will build up your confidence and your chops. Don’t worry about mistakes, everyone, even crochet pros, makes them.
    4. Finish off your afghan. Weave in the ends, and secure all the loose threads. It’s also a great idea to add crochet borders and block your afghan.
    5. Wash and maintain your afghan with care.

Now, I’ll explain each point more detail.

Ad.1 Choosing a Crochet Afghan Pattern

At this point there are a few questions  for you to answer.

The Why. Is it for yourself or to be given to someone? Will you wrap yourself up in it, or will it be a decoration? The more you use, the more you will wear out the threads and make lint.

Size. The intended use of your afghan will determine the size. To cover a bed, you need to measure your bed and size it up a bit. As a decorative accent throw, the afghan will be smaller than a bedspread.

Here you can find measurements of blanket sizes.

Crochet squares
Skill level. Noob or pro, that is the question. Match the pattern to your skill level. Be ambitious, push the envelope, but don’t overwhelm yourself.

Ad. 2 Choosing the Right Yarn and Hook for your Crochet Afghan Project

Before you start crocheting, you’ll need to gather some materials. The most important items, of course, are the yarn and the crochet hook. When choosing yarn, consider the weight, texture, and color. A medium-weight yarn is a good choice for beginners, as it’s easy to work with and comes in a wide range of colors.

Crochet hooks photo

As for the hook, choose one that corresponds with the weight of your yarn. Most medium-weight yarns work well with a size H (5mm) or I (5.5mm) hook. If you’re unsure which hook to use, consult the label on your yarn for recommended sizes.

In addition to yarn and a crochet hook, you’ll also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Ad. 3 Start to crochet

And now time for the everyone’s most favorite part. To start with your project, just follow the instructions of your afghan. Don’t worry about mistakes, everyone, even crochet pros, makes them. Fortunately they can be fixed by unraveling (frogging) and backtracking a bit.

Steady tension
In any activity that involves working with strings, ropes or the like, tension is of paramount importance. While you may not think so, keeping the tension even in your yarn is the main thing that keeps your project straight and true. It’s critical that even as you are getting tired towards a long session or the end of the project that you keep your string as taught as at the outset. If you don’t, you’ll end up with asymmetrical and crooked projects that unravel easily.

Ad. 4 Finish off your Blanket.

Borders are great. Even if the pattern doesn’t call for one, it’s a great idea to work one in. It’s definitely an effort, especially since you’ve essentially finished your project, but it’s worth the while.

Of course, how you finish can often make or break a project. While it may be annoying, and keep you from your next big project, you really do need to weave in your yarn ends, tie them off and trim off the excess. If you don’t, your project will unravel… and so will your motivation.

Do I need to block a crochet blanket?

You know how opinions are divided about whether coffee is good for you or not? Well, it’s the same with blocking. Some don’t do it at all, and some swear by it. The choice will boil down to your personal preference and the yarn you used.

Here is a great tutorial about How to Block Crochet Projects and How to Stiffen Crochet.

Ad 4. Take Care of your Blanket.

OK, now that you are here and you have your finished project in hand, it’s a good idea to make it last. Avoid snagging it, of course. If you do, repair the snag ASAP.

Next, if you do have to lay it out or stratch it, avoid pulling unevenly or really tugging on it in an off-center way. Fold it gently, and don’t pack it too tightly to avoid kinking threads.

Store it in the shade to avoid fading, and avoid direct sunlight or strong glare from fluorescents.

To wash you blanket, follow the yarn label instructions. If you are not sure if machine wash is allowed, always go with a safe option and handwash.

Conclusion:

Crocheting an afghan is not so difficult! Follow the steps above and you will get enough confidence to start your first project. If you read the article, you are ready to choose your first pattern. Here you can find over 50 amazing free crochet patterns to choose from:

We all like to be prudent and resourceful, but at the same time fun. So, here is an amazing pattern to use up some yarn leftovers, this double-thick potholder will be fun to make. This project is a fun and colorful boho cushion cover designed with easy crochet hexagons, so it’s perfect for ambitious beginners. It uses crochet techniques such as popcorn and front post stitches that add interesting textures.

You can use crochet boho hexagons for various projects, but blankets and crochet throw pillows are definitely the best choices. These little modules are so versatile because you can change colors and get different results every time. Boho throw cushions like this are very popular, so gift them to someone you love.

Let’s get started…

A Scraps of Yarn Project:
Easy crochet cushion is the perfect project to use up your leftover yarn, but this is completely optional, and it can be worked in coordinated colors.

colorful crochet hexagon cushion on wooden cabinet

Difficulty Level | Skills Required

đŸ§¶đŸ§¶ – Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing. This is a beginner-friendly idea for stunning home decor.

You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet). Special stitches are explained and provided in the instructions – if required.

Materials

  • Crochet Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
  • Scissors
  • Crochet Cushion Inner or Stuffing – check sizing.
  • Yarn needle

Yarn:

Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton 1 x ball =  50g / 130 yards / 119 meters.
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.

Approx 625 grams / 1487 meters / 1625 yards (12 œ  balls)

Approx. A – Sunshine = 1 œ balls / S – Natural = 2 œ balls.
All other colors approx. œ ball for each.

For this project I used an assortment of colors.

A – Sunshine; B – Ballet Pink; C – Pink; D – Raspberry; E – Baby Blue; F – Blue Bell; G – Royal Blue; H – Pale Lilac; I – Lilac; J – Violet; K – Mint; L – Avocado; M – Fern; N – Baby Yellow;
O – Orange; P – Sand; Q – Camel; R – Chestnut; S – Natural.

Yarn Substitute:

Using the same type of yarn throughout the project is recommended. The pattern suggests Cotton DK yarn, but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration that your sizing for the project will differ.

crochet hexagons joined together

Tension | Gauge

Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect – using the same yarn and hook will ensure hexagons remain the same size. Blocking can help with adjusting the sizing of hexagons. COUNTING your stitches will ensure the true success of this project!

Size

Rectangle – Approx. Length = 20 inch / 52 cm Width = 10 inches / 25 cm.
Square – Approx. Length and width = 14 inch / 36 cm.

Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your crochet cushion will be a different size!

Helpful Tips | Hints

  • It is recommended to weave in ends as you go.
  • Because several pieces need to be joined, it is important to count the stitches to ensure success.
  • If you have trouble with tension, please when advised use a larger hook.
  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process.

Crocheting a blanket doesn’t have to be hard, complicated, or reserved for experienced makers. In this article, we’ll prove that making a crochet blanket is not only possible but also a lot of fun! You will learn how to crochet a blanket and how to crochet a baby blanket.

We shaw you what to pay attention to, as well as how to choose the best tools and materials. You will also have a chance to check out the list of easy crochet blanket patterns to start with!

Making a crochet blanket

You don’t need any advanced skills to make a beautiful crochet blanket, so don’t worry! You can use basic stitches, such as single or double crochet, or try interesting easy techniques, such as moss stitch. It may sound a bit boring but remember that you can always play with the colors to make it more fun.

The most intimidating part of each project is choosing the right tools and materials. To make it easy, you need either experience or guidance. Don’t worry, though – with our help you’ll master it in no time.

Types of crochet blankets

Afghans

Crochet blankets, afghans, throws – there’s no big difference between them all, so crocheters use these terms interchangeably. You can work them in rows, rounds, or combine small parts into a larger piece, like granny squares.

Afghans have standard sizes (not too small, not too big), and can (but don’t have to) include decorative stitches. Each designer comes up with their own combination of patterns and colors. Still, you can always modify the original to your liking.

Baby Blankets

These blankets work up much faster because they are smaller! As the name suggests, baby blankets should fit a crib or kid-sized bed. Of course, there are no rules about how they should look, so there are as many projects as there are crocheters! Our collection of crochet baby blanket patterns is still growing.

Throws and Bedspreads

If you want to get cozy on the sofa, make yourself a crochet throw because this blanket is all about comfort.

Bedspreads, on the other hand, have another purpose – adding beauty to the bedroom. These crochet pieces often feature elegant motifs, decorative crochet stitches, or lace. The size is tightly connected to the size of your bed, so measure up before starting!

Chunky Blankets

Let’s meet beginners’ favorite – chunky crochet blankets. Their beauty lies in the qualities of the yarn, which is squishy, thick, and very pleasant to touch. Chunky blankets work up very fast, so it’s a perfect choice if you are impatient! Check out our ranking of The Best Yarn for Chunky Blankets, where you will find chunky yarn and super bulky yarns.

This technique is a combination of knitting and crochet, and it’s a very interesting one. Although it requires special crochet hooks and patience to learn, it’s worth trying. Learn more about the Basics of Tunisian Crochet in our article.

How to crochet a blanket (and how to crochet a baby blanket):

Making a blanket requires taking a few steps, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back!

1. Choose the design

Take some time to consider what you want your blanket to look like.

Should it be thick and warm, or light and airy? What size should it be? How do you want it to be constructed? It’s important to choose the right crochet project.

When you answer these questions, choose the stitch you like, or look for a free crochet pattern. There are TONS of them online (and TONS of them on our website!), so you’ve got plenty to choose from. For those who want to learn how to make a baby blanket, check Easy-Peasy Baby Blankets..

Remember to check the skill level required to follow each pattern. Being ambitious is great, but setting the bar too high will only lead to frustration.

2. Gather the tools and materials

This is the tricky part. The tools and the yarn you choose will have the biggest impact on the final effect.

Most crochet patterns recommend specific yarns and hook sizes, so it’s as easy as following the suggestions. However, if you want to choose your own combination, you need to know a little about the best yarns for crochet blankets and crochet hook sizes.

Hooks

Whether you design a blanket yourself or use someone else’s pattern, you need to make a gauge swatch. It will help you determine the size of your blanket and roughly calculate the amount of yarn needed for your project. Learn more about What is Gauge and Why is it Important in Crochet in our article.

The recommended size of the hook is almost always presented on the yarn label, along with the yarn weight and type.

Yarn

It’s very important to choose the right yarn for your project because they have various qualities. Some may be too thick, or too heavy. Others may have too little volume or scratchy texture.

If you plan to use multiple colors for your project, make sure you learn How to change colors in crochet.

3. Crochet it

When you’ve got your tools and yarn ready, and your gauge swatch turned out the perfect size, it’s time to get to it!

Instructions can be presented in three ways:

As a written pattern

This is the most popular type of crochet instructions, so it’s crucial for you to know How to Read Crochet Patterns. Crochet abbreviations and crochet terms may look strange at first, but it’s quite easy to learn what they mean.

In the form of a diagram (chart)

Some stitches or projects can be presented in the visual form, otherwise known as diagrams. Although they most often come with a key, it’s good to know How to Read Crochet Diagrams

In video tutorial

If you are a visual learner, video tutorials may be the best choice. Simply looking at the exact method the teacher uses can help you grasp the techniques much easier. It will be especially helpful for beginners.

Following the instructions

No matter the type of instructions, the yarn, or the stitch – pay close attention to what you’re doing, otherwise, you’ll have to frog! What is frogging? Unraveling, undoing what you’ve already crocheted. Try keeping the same tension throughout the entire piece, and change the colors if needed.

Tutorial :"How to crochet a baby blanket"

4. Finish it off

When you’ve got your blanket ready, but it’s full of loose ends and looks kind of wonky, it’s time to finish it off. Weave in the ends, and secure all loose threads.

If your blanket was made with blocks, be sure to join them together in a nice way!

It’s also a great idea to add crochet borders because not only can you hide all yarn ends inside, but also give your blanket a truly polished look.

5. Block it

I’m a firm believer in blocking absolutely every project, but I know many of you disagree. When it comes to blankets blocking may be difficult in some cases, but I’m sure you won’t regret it.

What is blocking, anyway? Well, it’s a method of gently washing and drying crochet items in such a way that allows them to get the required shape.

Loosen up those tight yarns and watch your blanket become even and soft!

Tips

To ensure that making a crochet blanket will be a great experience, try out 5 Best Crochet Hacks. Also, don’t forget about these:

  • Make a gauge swatch to be sure about the size of your blanket.
  • Plan your design – take time choosing the right colors and yarn.
  • Don’t be afraid to undo if you make any mistakes – leaving the mistake in the blanket will bother you until the end of time!
  • Take time to finish the blanket nicely – it may be tedious, but it’s worth it! Tie all the loose ends, add the border, block it, etc.

Creating decorated eggs is a beloved custom, with endless possibilities for design, though they don’t even need to be real eggs. Alternative materials such as wood, plastic, metal, and marble have been used. However, crocheted eggs have a timeless charm that is sure to be enjoyed. It’s also a great idea for Easter gifts if you don’t what to buy more plastic eggs or chocolate easter eggs.

But why we do have Easter Eggs?

The egg is a symbol of beginning, new life, and rebirth, so its perfectly complements Easter  traditions. Although the tradition of dyed eggs matches Easter perfectly, it has ancient pagan traditions that were later incorporated into Christian practices.

The first discovered dyed eggs comes form Mesopotamia. The dyed egg tradition was also known in Ancient Rome. In pre-Christian Europe, eggs were often decorated and given as gifts during spring festivals as a symbol of this renewal.

Later, this tradition was adopted by Christianity.  Over time, the practice of decorating and hiding eggs during Easter became more widespread, and today it is a popular tradition in many parts of the world.

How to make crochet easter egg?

Just pick your favorite pattern from the 20 free crochet easter egg patterns or free video tutorials below, find a yarn in Easter colors (pastel shades work well), and pick up a matching crochet hook to start your crochet project immediately. Additionally, you will also need scissors and a stuffing material such as fibrefill or cotton balls. A stitch marker won’t be necessary.

What is the easiest crochet Easter project for beginners?

The easiest project for beginners will be a simple, flat shape made with basic stitches. 2D-shaped eggs are exactly like that. A flat shape will be easy to follow and quick enough for inexperienced crocheter. It’s is also based on single crochet stitches.

So, you can’t decide whether to make bunnies or eggs for Easter?

Pick one of these adorable free crochet bunny pattern in the shape of egg and combine the best of both worlds! If you run out of time before Easter, consider making only bunny ear egg cover. Without a doubt, it’s always a good idea scrub up. Therefore, here are some ideas for crocheted cleaning accessories for the summer. Overall, each of these is a wonderful, useful little project that will add a splash of style to your daily ablutions or cleaning. However, if you bundle them just right, they’ll also make a fabulous gift, or addition to a gift. For example, they could be a personal touch with a toiletry set, or the basis of a larger gift. Don’t get your goombas all in a knot.

So, Super Mario is one of those iconic and fun themes that has been a constant presence in our lives since the 1980’s. Indeed, some of us played the original games when we were kids and our kids are playing both the old and the new games. Without a doubt, our grandkids (when we have them) will also play as well. Therefore, a mushroom and Mario project is fun way of bridging together the generations and making joyful items that anyone can relate to. Of course, we are also cognizant of beginners. Therefore these patterns are friendly to both newbies and veterans.

Crocheting dishcloths is a fun project for beginners. However, with so much yarn to choose from which is the best yarn to use when crocheting dishcloths? It can be easy to get overwhelmed with so many options in the market. But by using our guide to the best yarns for crocheting dishcloths you will be able to make the right decision for your project. So, let’s dive right in!

Find the best selection of quality yarns for crochet in Katia’s online store.

How to Choose the Right Yarn For Crochet Dishcloths?

Crocheting dishcloths is a great starter project to help you get comfortable with crochet. But it can be expensive. You don’t want to put your time into crocheting dishcloths that will fall apart when you use them. It would be a waste of time, money, and effort.

There are a few factors to consider while choosing the best yarn for crochet dishcloths!

Fiber Content

 Fiber Content

Every yarn has a label on it with the relevant information. Read the fiber content of the yarn you choose before buying it. It helps if you have already chosen a pattern to crochet such as the pretty dishcloth in this video crocheting a dishcloth. Dishcloths are used several times daily. Therefore, the yarn you choose for the crochet dishcloth should be durable and strong. Bamboo, cotton, and polyester are good for crocheting dishcloths. They are soft and won’t be hard on your hands while crocheting and using them.

Machine Washable

You don’t want to get yarn that is hard to take care of. That’s why choosing machine-washable yarn is a good choice. This information is also mentioned on the yarn label. Crochet dishcloths are definitely cute but they aren’t created to just sit around. You made them to help you dry the dishes. Make sure they are machine-washable and use good-quality yarn and your dishcloths will be easy to take care of and last a long time.

Holds in Moisture

A dishcloth that keeps sprinkling water around instead of absorbing won’t be the first choice when mopping up spills. Therefore, go for a yarn that holds the water well when you are drying the dishes with it. 100% cotton yarn is an excellent choice for this purpose.

Right Yarn For Crochet Dishcloths

What is the Best Fiber Choice For Crocheting Dishcloths?

The fiber type plays a significant role when choosing yarn for crocheting dishcloths. Next, we’ll discuss some of the common yarns used for crocheting dishcloths. This will help you choose the right fiber for your project.

Cotton Yarn

Cotton yarn is the favorite choice of many crocheters when making dishcloths. This kind of yarn is extremely absorbent. It dries a large number of dishes quickly and as a bonus is easy to crochet and takes care of as well. Most cotton yarns have a great stitch definition. They are machine-washable. Cotton yarns are inexpensive and come in a wide variety of colors. With this yarn, you can crochet dishcloths in different patterns.

Bamboo Yarn

Bamboo yarns are even more absorbent than cotton ones. It is their natural property therefore they make amazing crochet dishcloths. Bamboo yarn is lightweight and durable as well. Note: Bamboo yarn is susceptible to mildew when wet for a long time.

Polyester Yarn

Polyester yarn is a suitable option for dishcloths but it isn’t as absorbent as cotton yarn. If you want to crochet a scrubby then polyester yarn should be your first choice. It is low-maintenance and firm which makes it easy to crochet and care for.

Cushion your holidays

So, are you thinking of how to make the holidays more comfy and homey? Well, look no further, because here are 5 Christmas pillow ideas that take Yuletide coziness to the next level. While the tree, the table and the outside seem to get all the attention, the furniture always seems to be the bridesmaid. Therefore, let’s change this now and make our furniture (armchairs and couches) a Christmas extravaganza. Better still, these are quite simple patterns that even beginners can attempt  and expect to succeed at. Thus, there is no reason not to give them a whirl.

To begin with, this first pattern is a traditional image of an old-style pickup bringing home a tree. Overall, the mosaic-like quality gives it an interesting texture and a pleasant old-timeyness.

Bobble stitch blankets – beauty and texture

Although there are many crochet stitches, few render the amazing combination of texture and beauty that the bobble stitch does. In fact, this versatile technique is probably one of the most useful ones for those projects that require more than a flat, even surface. So, why not make a bobble stitch blanket for baby, for yourself or for that very special someone? Of course, if you don’t know this method, you may think the learning curve is a bit steep. However, it’s quite easy, really, so that even beginners can do this after a short run up.

Indeed, crocheted overlays, sleeves and other lighting project ideas are a very worthwhile addition to your repertoire. Moreover, they are also super beautiful in their own right. Thus they can serve as a beautiful, elegant or fun accent in any decor or room. Better still, they are also great beginner projects that aren’t a blanket or a piece of clothing. Julie Basket

To begin with, here is a basket cover that’s simple to make, has a wonderful texture and really plays well with many colors. The author calls it addictive, and I totally understand why.

Vernon Planter Cover

Next, this basket cover is a denser, stiffer one. Therefore, in addition to hiding unsightly flower pots, this can be used as a standalone basket. Even better, the stripes mean that you can use yarn odds and ends, without having to break out new skeins. So, you can now make room for even more yarns from your local gettin’ spot.
