If you can think of one handmade item which is THE essence of crochet, it will definitely be a granny square blanket.

Crocheting a granny square blanket is a timeless and rewarding craft that has been passed down through generations. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a new project, this is a delightful journey that results in a cozy and beautiful finished product. Let our guide walk you through the step-by-step process of crocheting your own granny square blanket. We’re certain this will be a lifelong love for you.

Types of Granny Square Blankets:

Granny square blankets come in various styles and designs, each offering a unique aesthetic appeal. Here are some of the most popular types of granny square blankets:

1. Traditional Granny Square Throw Blanket

This classic style features traditional granny squares encompassing clusters of double crochets separated by chain spaces. These squares are typically joined together to create a larger blanket. Traditional granny square blankets often use a mix of colors for a vibrant and playful look. In this, they can be like patchwork.

If you are a granny square newbie, before starting this blanket, learn how to make a classic granny square from the double crochet dc stitch:

Here is an example of a traditional granny square blanket:

2. Solid Granny Square Blanket

In contrast to the traditional style, solid granny square blankets use the same color for each square. The resulting blankets are more uniform and cohesive. They can feature solid-colored squares or variations in shades of the same color for added depth and visual appeal. For the really adventurous, you can even lay out images or broader patterns with squares.

If you are a granny square newbie, before starting this blanket, learn how to make a solid granny square:

3. Granny Stripe Blanket

Granny stripe blankets are made by crocheting rows of granny stripes rather than individual squares. Each row consists of clusters of double crochets worked into chain spaces, creating a wavy, striped effect. Granny stripe blankets can be made using a single color or multiple colors for a striped or gradient look.

3. Single Square Granny Blanket

A variation that’s really neat and fun is a granny square blanket made from a single square. Instead of making many granny squares and joining them together, you are making only one, oversize square. You start in the middle of the blanket and add more and more rounds to make your blanket grow to the desired size.

4. Granny Square Afghan:

Afghan-style blankets often feature large, intricate granny square motifs with complex patterns and designs. These blankets may incorporate elements such as flowers, geometric shapes, or textured stitches for added visual interest. And, of course, colors… tons and tons of colors.

Whether you prefer a classic, traditional look or a more modern and eclectic style, there’s a granny square blanket design to suit your taste and aesthetic preference. So, grab your crochet hook and yarn, and start crocheting your own beautiful granny square blanket today!

A collage showcasing a variety of colorful blankets in different patterns.

What are some easy baby blanket crochet patterns?

A single square blanket made from one square which grows by increasing the row count is the easiest method to make granny blankets. A granny stripe blanket is also a very forgiving pattern that’s easy to follow.

A classic granny square blanket will be perfect for you if you can crochet for a  short amount in between other activities, such as while waiting for a bus. You can make squares one-by-one and carry only a small amount of yarn with you at any given time.

How to Crochet a Granny Square Blanket

Step 1: Decide which type of a blanket you will make

The Granny Stripe Blanket and a single square Granny Square Blanket don’t require joining squares, so they should be made relatively easier than blankets made from many traditional or solid granny squares.

A collage demonstrating different crochet patterns for granny square blankets with instructional titles.

Step 2: Decide the size and shape

Decide the size and shape you will make. If you wish to make a rectangular blanket, it will be easier to make from rectangles or granny stripes. The finished size is easiest to adjust using a granny stripe pattern.

In blankets made of combined granny squares, the size will be determined by the size of the individual squares. Thus the total length of each side will be a multiple of the square size.

A standard size for a granny square is typically around 6-8 rounds, but you can make yours larger or smaller depending on your preference.

If you are making a square baby blanket, a granny square blanket (type 3) made from one square will be the easiest project to make.

Step 3: Gather all the materials

Before we dive into the crocheting process,  you’ll need:

  • Yarn: Choose your favorite yarn in the colors of your choice. You can opt for a single color or multiple colors for a more vibrant look. Any worsted weight yarn will be a good yarn to start with.
  • If you are planning to design your own pattern (e.g. from yarn you already have, you can use on-line tools to help you with the design. I described those tools in my previous post – granny square color generators).
  • Crochet Hook: Select a crochet hook that corresponds to the weight of your yarn. A size H/8 (5.00mm) hook is commonly used for medium weight yarn.
  • Scissors: A good pair of scissors is essential for cutting yarn and weaving in ends.
  • Tapestry Needle: You’ll need a yarn needle for weaving in loose ends and joining granny squares.
  • Tape Measure: This will come in handy for ensuring your squares and a blanket are the desired size.

Step 4: Learn the basis

If you have never crocheted before, you don’t have to practice many stitches. You can speed up the process and jump to the tutorials on how to make a traditional granny square or how to crochet a solid granny square, according to the pattern chosen.

Step 5: Increase the Size

Once you have made your first square, you are ready to move further. To make the traditional granny square blanket, continue with making all squares needed to get the desired size (as you have calculated it in the step 2).

If you have chose the single granny square method, continue adding rounds to your granny square, increasing the number of clusters and chain spaces with each round. You can stop increasing when your granny square reaches the desired size.

Step 6: Joining Granny Squares (Optional)

If you’re making a blanket composed of multiple granny squares, you can join them together using various methods such as single crochet, slip stitch, or whip stitch. Experiment with different joining techniques to find the one you prefer. Different projects will work best with different joining methods. Experiment with all of them!

Step 7: Adding the Border (Optional)

You can finish your blanket with a row of a single crochets.

Step 8: Finish Off

Once your granny square reaches the desired size, fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.

Conclusion:

Crocheting a granny square blanket is a delightful and fulfilling project that allows you to unleash your creativity. At the same time you get the satisfaction of producing a cozy and timeless piece. Whether you’re making it for yourself, a loved one, or as a gift, the process of crocheting a granny square blanket is sure to bring joy and fulfillment. So, gather your materials, follow these simple steps, and embark on a journey of creativity and warmth!

Crocheting a granny square is an easy task. In fact, it’s a pure pleasure.

If you are a newbie, first go to my beginner granny square patterns post and learn how to crochet a granny square or follow a step-by-step tutorial on a solid granny square.

If you are already an advanced beginner familiar with double crochet clusters, just pick one of the basic granny square patterns  or granny squares patterns for intermediate or advanced crocheters and you are good to go. However, regardless of your skill level, it may get a little bit complicated when you are making a granny square blanket. Nevertheless, when you are crocheting a classic granny square pattern or solid granny, often the most difficult task is to arrange the colors of your squares and of whole blankets as well.

If you are making a granny square blanket in a single color with each square the same, you don’t have to read further. However, if you are planning to crochet a granny square blanket full of colors, a color pattern generator is a great help. It will not only create a harmonized mosaic for you but will list the colors and even the name of the color of yarn you are to use in each row.

My favourite Granny Squares generators

Granny Squares Color Pattern Generator in Stylecrafts Colors

My one preferred color generator to recommend is the granny square color picker by Witty Crafts Design. You can choose how many squares your blanket will have in each row and how many rows you will go with.

This generator works with the  Stylecraft colours yarn palette, but many other types of yarn have an analogous color scheme.

Use this generator if you:

Are using Stylecraft yarns or yarns with a similar hues pallette

or

You need ideas which color to choose for your blanket.

The more colors you choose, the more colors you will get in each square. The generator is limited to 8 colors.

Below are examples of how the generator works in warm and cool color combinations.

If you want to use your own colors, or want to use more than 8 colors per square, the better option will be https://grannysquarecolors.com/ which allows you to pick any color you want from the color wheel and use up to 10 different colors per square!

Use the color wheel generator if you:

or

You want to define the number pf colors per square

Are you looking for free crochet patterns for granny squares? In this post, I’ve compiled unique patterns to ignite your creativity. Each of these granny square patterns is stunning and challenging, so I hope there’s something motivational here for you, no matter whether you’re a crocheted newbie or an advanced crocheter.

Are you are interested in beginner and free granny square patterns? Do you what to learn how to crochet a granny square or looking for a step-by-step tutorial on a solid granny?   please read my previous post: 30 Free Crochet Patterns for Granny Squares addressed particularly to beginner crocheters.

What is the point of granny squares? Why are they so popular?

We all have some nostalgia for traditional granny squares and some fond memories from childhood. But there are so many other reasons to love them. Like these:

  • Only basic crochet techniques are required. Master the chain stitch, single crochet, double crochet and sl st, and you are OTW.
  • They are one of the most beginner friendly patterns… for kids too!
  • Great for teaching a new crop of crocheters.
  • You don’t need whole skeins of yarn. Just take short lengths, like leftover bits from larger projects. Combine them to make a colorful granny square panoply!
  • You don’t need a lot of equipment.
  • Also, they’re modular. You can make individual granny squares until you have a stack to connect. Or, you can make a blanket of a certain size, like a baby blanket, and then it can grow by adding more squares in the future.
  • Single granny squares, or another small numbers of them, can be coasters or parts of larger projects.
  • Crocheting of any kind can be a stress reliever. It’s meditational, with the added bonus that you actually make something.
  • Feel like trying something new, but don’t want to take on a whole, huge project? Make test pieces as granny squares.
  • Build confidence and stamina without risking a larger project.
  • Create whole bunches of varied ones as gifts!

Do you know where the granny square originated? I don’t either, and no one does! The stories about its origin are vague at best. Lost in the mists of time, you could say.

Supposedly, they’re called Granny squares because way back when, grannies would save scraps of yarn from old projects or frogged fabric to make scrap squares. These were patchworked together into colorful blankets. Since grannies supposedly couldn’t do any heavy labour, they were usually the ones to sew these blankets together. Hence, Granny squares!

What is called a Granny Square?

The basic granny square patterns consists of groups of 3dc made in a square block. Nowadays, you’ve got granny square variations like solid granny squares, sunburst granny squares, and so on. There’s not one clear-cut definition that is universally recognized, as far as I know, and so, it’s all grannies!

For me, a Granny square IS square, and can be used in multiples (like for blankets or pillow) and has a little element of dc’s or clusters. But that’s just my definition, and you can have your own! It doesn’t matter anyway – they’re beautiful to look at and fun to make and that’s what counts.

What can I use a Granny Square for?

You can join squares together to make a granny square blanket, cardigan, bag, bunting, fingerless. Honestly, the list is endless. Not only can you make a bunch of them and join them to make an afghan or a bedspread, you can also use them separately as decorations or as the center of a baby blanket.

Many crocheters use blocks to make accessories, too! Bags, backpacks and totes are stylish and work up quicker with a granny centerpiece or backbone.

What yarn should I use for a Granny Square?

Almost any type of yarn is suitable for use in a granny square design. If you’re a beginner, I’d stick to cotton yarns like Catona, Lily or acrylics such as Bernat, Stylecraft, Red Heart. They’re available in a range of colours and have clear stitch definition, making it easy to crochet with. Try to pick a medium weight yarn (#4 Medium) or thiner. It will be easier to see the stitches in your granny square project.

If you already made a few easy granny square patterns and you are looking for more: Stop! Here are some divided into 11 intermediate and advanced patterns to love crochet even more! Be proud of your accomplishments.

Granny Square FAQs:

Here are some of the most frequent questions I get from you about granny squares:

How long does it take to crochet a granny square blanket?

This depends of the square’s simplicity, the desired blanket size and your skills. Also, it depends on the yarn weight and hook size. A crochet blanket can be made in a few hours but can also take indefinitely 🙂

A simple granny square from 4 rounds can be made in a few minutes, depending on your skills. If you are a beginner, and you are able to make 4 rounds of a simple 5” granny in 10 minutes, it will take you approx. 7 hours to make a stroller sized baby blanket. With practice, you can decrease this time by half or more.

While choosing the pattern, remember that a larger yarn works faster, and simple patterns go faster. If you decide to add more colors of yarns, or are using a thinner yarn or making smaller squares, it will takes longer.

What is the best size crochet hook for granny squares?

The best size of the crochet hook for granny squares will be determined by the yarn you are using. Check the yarn label to see which hook size is recommended. If you don’t have a yarn yet or are unsure which one to get, a worsted weight yarn (size 4) or thicker will be the best choice.

How do you crochet a granny square step by step?

A granny square is one of the most popular techniques and you will be able to master it quickly. After you get proficient with the basic granny square, you can then use it to make blankets, scarves, vests and many other different projects. You can crochet a granny square even if you have never crocheted before.  Go to a free pattern on Your Crochet and follow the step-by-step tutorial.

Have you ever heard about the bullion stitch?

If not so much, you are in the right place! The bullion stitch is a very decorative 3D technique which is not widely popular, but definitely worth trying. I consider it one of the hidden gems among stitches.

A bullion stitch is essentially a cluster of loops which looks like wrapped rope. It’s very visually appealing and will make a unique accent for your project.

What can a bullion stich be used for?

Bullion stich can be used as an accent, such as an accent row in a blanket or they can be grouped together to create intricate designs. You can also use it to crochet flowers or any textured patterns.

Is the bullion stitch hard to learn?

A bullion stitch is relatively easy to make, although it can be a bit tricky  at times. It definitely requires good tension control. While you master it, you can use it to add a beautiful touch to any of your ongoing crochet projects. Below, you will find a tutorial how to make it and many examples of how versatile it is and beautiful textures it can create.

Another example of how you may use this technique is the rainbow mix blanket. Here, the stitch creates solely the eye-catching texture underlining the centre of the blanket.

Looking for a modern-style baby blanket but have you always admired the vintage style?

The best season for crocheting is coming. The colder days and longer evenings encourage you to spend more time in your favourite armchair with a crochet hook in hand. If there’s a fireplace in front of it, so much the better. It is the best time to try a Hopscotch Blanket inspired by the vintage filet blankets.

Tanya Eberhardt created the pattern in 2016. It combines a delicate texture and airy zig-zag waves. To make it more intriguing, you can add gradient colours in deference to your preferences.

A finished blanket measures approx. 30×35 inches (76×89 cm) but you can easily extend it to the size you need. The suggested yarn is DK light yarn, (11 wpi). Below we will see, what this blanket looks like in different chosen yarns and colorways.

The yarn used is this blanket Sirdar Snuggly DK in the following shades: Pastel Lemon, White, Pearly Pink, and Pearly Green and a 3.5mm hook (E/4). It’s very interesting how the zig zags of voids interplay with the different color bands.

A ripple afghan is always a very popular item as it is eye-catching and colorful.
Although straight lines are fun, these wavy ripples are so much more enjoyable and rich. Use a yarn weight chart to match textures.

Chunky Feather and Fan Afghan Free Crochet Pattern

The Chunky Afghan is thick but airy. You can wrap it around yourself while sitting in your favourite chair and enjoy the evening chill. It is a fun project to complete so I hope this pattern will become one of your favourites.

Also, the blanket size is adjustable, so that you can make this as big as you want. I would also encourage you to play around with colors. There’s just so much room for customization there.

Modern Granny Afghan

It’s a granny afghan, but granny’s put on her air pods and has gone to Starbucks for a salt caramel frappucino. This means it’s a modern take on a timeless classic. It uses interwoven blocks instead of squares. As a result, you get a more cohesive and interesting texture without a traditional granny square look.

Likewise, the size is also easily adjustable, and this project can be sized using both yarn weights and rows numbers. It can be a baby blanket, a giant bedspread or anything in between.

Drop in the Pond

To show the true versatility of this classic, here is another granny variation. Based on easy and repeatable stitches, you will get an a quick, fun and airy blanket with an interesting appearance. It’s super easy to personalize with just about any hue variant. I would recommend making a few test swatches to figure out your optimal color choices and their order.

Stashaholic’s Brain Dead Afghan

Looking beyond the très amusant name, this is a lovely afghan pattern with a gorgeous, shingled texture. The pattern is designed to use up an existing yarn stash, instead of buying a bunch of new stock. Of course, the reason we would use up the yarn stash is so that we can buy more yarn, which may make the last point a bit self-defeating.

Beautiful Shell Afghan

We haven’t looked at a square-based pattern yet, so I’d like to fix this glaring omission now. Thus, here is one such project. Start by crocheting small squares and join them together into a blanket when you have enough of them. You can customize your afghan by choosing different colors and arranging the squares in various patterns.

Elsewise, you can incorporate squares made using a different pattern… or even of a different size – so long as the sizes are even multiples of one another. However, this shell square is still one of my favorites.

Grannie Goes Large

As we all know, granny is a classic crochet motif that is very easy to make. It is also extremely repeatable. The best way to customize your afghan is by choosing different colors and arranging them in interesting designs.

Block Stitch Afghan

It may look complicated, but if you see how this blanket is made, you will surely want to give it a try. Based on double crochet stitches, I bet it will quickly become your favourite.

Battenberg Blanket

Here is the next square blanket. Start with small squares using basic stitches. Once you have enough squares, join them together with a whipstitch or slip-stitch. The voids setting out 90 degree squares neatly offset the colored squares at 45 degrees to them.

Finally, here is a real classic: a granny stripes blanket but it also has a modern take on it. This too is a great pattern to use up yarn ends, as you can implement many colors into this pattern, a bit at a time.

Crochet afghans are a beloved and classic way to to make your rooms more cozy and warm. After all, they are not only a snug wrap for a chilly evening, but also a striking, decorative touch that will draw the eye and start conversations.

While a beginner may find them intimidating, you will do well with two things, some basic skills and patience.

Let us take you on an afghan-making journey. We’ll begin with selecting the right materials and guide you all the way through to the finishing touches.

Afghans and crochet blankets, which is which?

The word ‘afghan’ originally referred to a type of woollen blanket that was produced in Afghanistan and exported to other parts of the world. Over time, the term was used more widely to refer to any type of crocheted or knitted blanket that typically features geometric patterns or motifs.

Today, however, these terms are used somewhat exchangeably, and we can say that all afghans are blankets, but not all blanket are afghans.

yarn

How to Crochet a Afghan

Here is a list of steps for making any afghan or blanket:

    1. Choose a pattern. There are plenty of wonderful free crochet afghan patterns at any skill level. The one for you is out there. I guarantee it!
    2. Gather your supplies. The yarn and crochet hook sizes are usually given in the pattern you choose. You will often need scissors and stitch markers.
    3. Start to crochet! Follow the instructions carefully, but don’t be overwhelmed. In no time flat, you will build up your confidence and your chops. Don’t worry about mistakes, everyone, even crochet pros, makes them.
    4. Finish off your afghan. Weave in the ends, and secure all the loose threads. It’s also a great idea to add crochet borders and block your afghan.
    5. Wash and maintain your afghan with care.

Now, I’ll explain each point more detail.

Ad.1 Choosing a Crochet Afghan Pattern

At this point there are a few questions  for you to answer.

The Why. Is it for yourself or to be given to someone? Will you wrap yourself up in it, or will it be a decoration? The more you use, the more you will wear out the threads and make lint.

Size. The intended use of your afghan will determine the size. To cover a bed, you need to measure your bed and size it up a bit. As a decorative accent throw, the afghan will be smaller than a bedspread.

Here you can find measurements of blanket sizes.

Crochet squares
Skill level. Noob or pro, that is the question. Match the pattern to your skill level. Be ambitious, push the envelope, but don’t overwhelm yourself.

Ad. 2 Choosing the Right Yarn and Hook for your Crochet Afghan Project

Before you start crocheting, you’ll need to gather some materials. The most important items, of course, are the yarn and the crochet hook. When choosing yarn, consider the weight, texture, and color. A medium-weight yarn is a good choice for beginners, as it’s easy to work with and comes in a wide range of colors.

Crochet hooks photo

As for the hook, choose one that corresponds with the weight of your yarn. Most medium-weight yarns work well with a size H (5mm) or I (5.5mm) hook. If you’re unsure which hook to use, consult the label on your yarn for recommended sizes.

In addition to yarn and a crochet hook, you’ll also need a pair of scissors and a tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Ad. 3 Start to crochet

And now time for the everyone’s most favorite part. To start with your project, just follow the instructions of your afghan. Don’t worry about mistakes, everyone, even crochet pros, makes them. Fortunately they can be fixed by unraveling (frogging) and backtracking a bit.

crocheting photo

Steady tension… In any activity that involves working with strings, ropes or the like, tension is of paramount importance. While you may not think so, keeping the tension even in your yarn is the main thing that keeps your project straight and true. It’s critical that even as you are getting tired towards a long session or the end of the project that you keep your string as taught as at the outset. If you don’t, you’ll end up with asymmetrical and crooked projects that unravel easily.

Ad. 4 Finish off your Blanket.

Borders are great. Even if the pattern doesn’t call for one, it’s a great idea to work one in. It’s definitely an effort, especially since you’ve essentially finished your project, but it’s worth the while.

Of course, how you finish can often make or break a project. While it may be annoying, and keep you from your next big project, you really do need to weave in your yarn ends, tie them off and trim off the excess. If you don’t, your project will unravel… and so will your motivation.

Do I need to block a crochet blanket?

You know how opinions are divided about whether coffee is good for you or not? Well, it’s the same with blocking. Some don’t do it at all, and some swear by it. The choice will boil down to your personal preference and the yarn you used.

Here is a great tutorial about How to Block Crochet Projects and How to Stiffen Crochet.

Ad 4. Take Care of your Blanket.

OK, now that you are here and you have your finished project in hand, it’s a good idea to make it last. Avoid snagging it, of course. If you do, repair the snag ASAP.

Next, if you do have to lay it out or stratch it, avoid pulling unevenly or really tugging on it in an off-center way. Fold it gently, and don’t pack it too tightly to avoid kinking threads.

Store it in the shade to avoid fading, and avoid direct sunlight or strong glare from fluorescents.

To wash you blanket, follow the yarn label instructions. If you are not sure if machine wash is allowed, always go with a safe option and handwash.

Conclusion:

Crocheting an afghan is not so difficult! Follow the steps above and you will get enough confidence to start your first project. If you read the article, you are ready to choose your first pattern. Here you can find over 50 amazing free crochet patterns to choose from:

  • tapestry needle (optional for weaving in ends)

If you want to make a stunning crochet cushion for your home, we’ve got this free crochet pattern by the one and only Joanita Theron.

I’m sure you’ve heard about her because he’s one of the most prolific crochet designers – her Ravelry store has over 600 designs! Be sure to visit her website Creative Crochet Workshop because it’s full of stunning patterns and inspiring projects.

This project is a fun and colorful boho cushion cover designed with easy crochet hexagons, so it’s perfect for ambitious beginners. It uses crochet techniques such as popcorn and front post stitches that add interesting textures.

You can use crochet boho hexagons for various projects, but blankets and crochet throw pillows are definitely the best choices. These little modules are so versatile because you can change colors and get different results every time. Boho throw cushions like this are very popular, so gift them to someone you love.

Let’s get started…

A Scraps of Yarn Project:
Easy crochet cushion is the perfect project to use up your leftover yarn, but this is completely optional, and it can be worked in coordinated colors.

Difficulty Level | Skills Required

🧶🧶 – Easy
Basic stitches in simple variations, simple repeats, color changes, shaping and finishing. This is a beginner-friendly idea for stunning home decor.

You will need to know basic stitches like SC (single crochet) and DC (double crochet). Special stitches are explained and provided in the instructions – if required.

Materials

  • Crochet Hook – 3, 50 mm (E)
  • Scissors
  • Crochet Cushion Inner or Stuffing – check sizing.
  • Yarn needle

Yarn:

Vinnis Colours – DK Nikkim 100% cotton 1 x ball =  50g / 130 yards / 119 meters.
Weight – DK (11 wpi) 3: Light.

Approx 625 grams / 1487 meters / 1625 yards (12 ½  balls)

Approx. A – Sunshine = 1 ½ balls / S – Natural = 2 ½ balls.
All other colors approx. ½ ball for each.

For this project I used an assortment of colors.

A – Sunshine; B – Ballet Pink; C – Pink; D – Raspberry; E – Baby Blue; F – Blue Bell; G – Royal Blue; H – Pale Lilac; I – Lilac; J – Violet; K – Mint; L – Avocado; M – Fern; N – Baby Yellow;
O – Orange; P – Sand; Q – Camel; R – Chestnut; S – Natural.

Yarn Substitute:

Using the same type of yarn throughout the project is recommended. The pattern suggests Cotton DK yarn, but you are not limited to this type of yarn. Any yarn can be used if you take into consideration that your sizing for the project will differ.

crochet hexagons joined together

Tension | Gauge

Gauge is NOT necessary for this project to be perfect – using the same yarn and hook will ensure hexagons remain the same size. Blocking can help with adjusting the sizing of hexagons. COUNTING your stitches will ensure the true success of this project!

Size

Rectangle – Approx. Length = 20 inch / 52 cm Width = 10 inches / 25 cm.
Square – Approx. Length and width = 14 inch / 36 cm.

Remember – if you use/choose a different yarn weight/hook size your crochet cushion will be a different size!

Helpful Tips | Hints

  • It is recommended to weave in ends as you go.
  • Because several pieces need to be joined, it is important to count the stitches to ensure success.
  • If you have trouble with tension, please when advised use a larger hook.
  • Most importantly, have fun and enjoy the process.

Congratulations, your crochet cushion is now ready and you can finally rest your head on it! I’m sure the effect is great, so put it on display and invite friends over 🙂 You can be sure about the number of compliments you’ll get because the boho style is still on trend.

You can fill this pillow form with filling, or put a pillow insert inside.

Joanita’s designs will be a perfect place to start if you are a beginner because her patterns are easy to follow. Step-by-step instructions explain every stitch and detail, but ultimately it’s up to you what color palette you choose. Before you decide on your colorway, be sure to try out a few options. All things considered, it’s always a good practice to make gauge swatches and yarn swatches.

Remember that you can always use these crochet hexagons as they are and make, for example, a hexagon wall hanging.

You can use basic stitches, such as single or double crochet, or try interesting easy techniques, such as moss stitch. It may sound a bit boring but remember that you can always play with the colors to make it more fun.

The most intimidating part of each project is choosing the right tools and materials. To make it easy, you need either experience or guidance. Don’t worry, though – with our help you’ll master it in no time.

Types of crochet blankets

Afghans

Crochet blankets, afghans, throws – there’s no big difference between them all, so crocheters use these terms interchangeably. You can work them in rows, rounds, or combine small parts into a larger piece, like granny squares.

Afghans have standard sizes (not too small, not too big), and can (but don’t have to) include decorative stitches. Each designer comes up with their own combination of patterns and colors. Still, you can always modify the original to your liking.

Baby Blankets

These blankets work up much faster because they are smaller! As the name suggests, baby blankets should fit a crib or kid-sized bed. Of course, there are no rules about how they should look, so there are as many projects as there are crocheters! Our collection of crochet baby blanket patterns is still growing.

Throws and Bedspreads

If you want to get cozy on the sofa, make yourself a crochet throw because this blanket is all about comfort.

Bedspreads, on the other hand, have another purpose – adding beauty to the bedroom. These crochet pieces often feature elegant motifs, decorative crochet stitches, or lace. The size is tightly connected to the size of your bed, so measure up before starting!

Chunky Blankets

Let’s meet beginners’ favorite – chunky crochet blankets. Their beauty lies in the qualities of the yarn, which is squishy, thick, and very pleasant to touch. Chunky blankets work up very fast, so it’s a perfect choice if you are impatient! Check out our ranking of The Best Yarn for Chunky Blankets, where you will find chunky yarn and super bulky yarns.

Tunisian Crochet Blankets

This technique is a combination of knitting and crochet, and it’s a very interesting one. Although it requires special crochet hooks and patience to learn, it’s worth trying. Learn more about the Basics of Tunisian Crochet in our article.

How to crochet a blanket (and how to crochet a baby blanket):

Making a blanket requires taking a few steps, but don’t worry – we’ve got your back!

1. Choose the design

Take some time to consider what you want your blanket to look like.

Should it be thick and warm, or light and airy? What size should it be? How do you want it to be constructed? It’s important to choose the right crochet project.

When you answer these questions, choose the stitch you like, or look for a free crochet pattern. There are TONS of them online (and TONS of them on our website!), so you’ve got plenty to choose from. For those who want to learn how to make a baby blanket, check Easy-Peasy Baby Blankets..

Remember to check the skill level required to follow each pattern. Being ambitious is great, but setting the bar too high will only lead to frustration.

2. Gather the tools and materials

This is the tricky part. The tools and the yarn you choose will have the biggest impact on the final effect.

Most crochet patterns recommend specific yarns and hook sizes, so it’s as easy as following the suggestions. However, if you want to choose your own combination, you need to know a little about the best yarns for crochet blankets and crochet hook sizes.

Hooks

Whether you design a blanket yourself or use someone else’s pattern, you need to make a gauge swatch. It will help you determine the size of your blanket and roughly calculate the amount of yarn needed for your project. Learn more about What is Gauge and Why is it Important in Crochet in our article.

The recommended size of the hook is almost always presented on the yarn label, along with the yarn weight and type.

Yarn

It’s very important to choose the right yarn for your project because they have various qualities. Some may be too thick, or too heavy. Others may have too little volume or scratchy texture.

If you plan to use multiple colors for your project, make sure you learn How to change colors in crochet.

3. Crochet it

When you’ve got your tools and yarn ready, and your gauge swatch turned out the perfect size, it’s time to get to it!

 crochet blanket yc8

Instructions can be presented in three ways:

As a written pattern

This is the most popular type of crochet instructions, so it’s crucial for you to know How to Read Crochet Patterns. Crochet abbreviations and crochet terms may look strange at first, but it’s quite easy to learn what they mean.

In the form of a diagram (chart)

Some stitches or projects can be presented in the visual form, otherwise known as diagrams. Although they most often come with a key, it’s good to know How to Read Crochet Diagrams

In video tutorial

If you are a visual learner, video tutorials may be the best choice. Simply looking at the exact method the teacher uses can help you grasp the techniques much easier. It will be especially helpful for beginners.

Following the instructions

No matter the type of instructions, the yarn, or the stitch – pay close attention to what you’re doing, otherwise, you’ll have to frog! What is frogging? Unraveling, undoing what you’ve already crocheted. Try keeping the same tension throughout the entire piece, and change the colors if needed.

Tutorial :"How to crochet a baby blanket"

4. Finish it off

When you’ve got your blanket ready, but it’s full of loose ends and looks kind of wonky, it’s time to finish it off. Weave in the ends, and secure all loose threads.

If your blanket was made with blocks, be sure to join them together in a nice way!

It’s also a great idea to add crochet borders because not only can you hide all yarn ends inside, but also give your blanket a truly polished look.

5. Block it

I’m a firm believer in blocking absolutely every project, but I know many of you disagree. When it comes to blankets blocking may be difficult in some cases, but I’m sure you won’t regret it.

What is blocking, anyway? Well, it’s a method of gently washing and drying crochet items in such a way that allows them to get the required shape.

Loosen up those tight yarns and watch your blanket become even and soft!

Tips

To ensure that making a crochet blanket will be a great experience, try out 5 Best Crochet Hacks. Also, don’t forget about these:

  • Make a gauge swatch to be sure about the size of your blanket.
  • Plan your design – take time choosing the right colors and yarn.
  • Don’t be afraid to undo if you make any mistakes – leaving the mistake in the blanket will bother you until the end of time!
  • Take time to finish the blanket nicely – it may be tedious, but it’s worth it! Tie all the loose ends, add the border, block it, etc.

It’s time to build your crochet chops. While seasonal projects are all fine and dandy, it’s the general use, staple techniques that make or break the crocheter.

Therefore, it’s always a good idea to learn and practice useful stitches. To this end, here are some borders for C2C blanket projects. C2C is a wonderful way of building up large projects with geometric designs. Overall, even though you do this manually it’s almost a digital way of crocheting. However, these projects need a great finish to be truly complete. This is best done by a great border. Better still, these edges can also match other projects as well, giving you possibility to versify your projects.

Ain’t no school like the old school.

A bulky yarn and a simple repeatable pattern can also be a recipe for a unique blanket, especially when there is a twist implemented. A farmhouse granny square with diagonal lines of puff stitches creates a diamond pattern when combined. The squares can be made in any size you want, so the size of the whole blanket is easy to adjust. This is one of those patterns which looks good both in monochrome and in color. Moreover, you can make it in any color you want or combine colors in a smart way to get desire effect. There are lots of possibilities for personification and to get a blanket that exactly fits your needs. What is more, you can use this pattern to make not only blankets, but also pillows, wall hangers, bags, etc. So, let’s see how your future project can look like.

Everyone needs blankets

Of course, not all blanket patterns are created equal. Indeed, some are so much more than others. To get you started, here are some wonderful, fun patterns that will get you rolling. Today’s focus is on mosaic blanket crochet patterns.

Mosaic crochet patterns are good for both, as a throw blankets or big bedspreads. Like their namesakes, they are made small geometric components. This small components are put together to create a larger pattern. There are multiple visual levels you can create that way.

You can also use a different textures to get more effect. Thus you can explore them with sight and touch for days at a time. Grab your crochet hook and let’s get started.

Finally, let’s get back to classic mosaics. This particular one is a wonderful example of conceptual layers.

Firstly, it starts with the color shifts between the bars. Then, the bars are arranged into diagonals and squares. Finally, those squares form into larger squares. Truly, I love the squares on squares aesthetic.

Due to dense texture this pattern looks like a knitted blanket. This pattern consist of a small geometric figures. Thanks to that, it will be easier to adjust a size needed to obtain your preferable blanket.

Put some spring in your step!
Well, maybe not in your step, but certainly in your blanket. So, even though it’s still the middle of winter, it’s great to look forward to the next season. Therefore here are some spring blanket ideas to get you thinking about the big thaw. Moreover, since these are blankets, they’ll be useful right away too. Better still, they are easy patterns that are sure to b great for the beginner, but also fun for the veteran. Indeed, there is something here for everyone.

Daisy Granny Square

Although it may look complicated, it’s an easy pattern for a spring blanket. It’s one of the most beautiful squares of all, a great spring reminiscence.

Springfrost Blanket

Next, this spring blanket is perfect for a stroller for the beginning of the spring, when days can be still cooler. To summarize, this is a CAL that started in January and will last until the end of February 2023. Furthermore, it uses 15 colors of Stylecraft Special DK yarn which perfectly envisages winter sunny weather when it is still freezing, but the outdoors are full of colors.

Tulip Stitch Afghan

Finally, here is a spring blanket which incorporates the tulip stitch pattern, instead of single crochet. I adore the very spring-like theme of this project. Overall, this one will be perfect for a baby blanket.

Christmas and New Year’s are a year away

Thus, before we get into the other holidays of the year, it’s time for to concentrate on other projects. To this end, I think we should work on some more personal ones. Of course, one of the very best is a temperature blanket, which is a really great therapeutic aid for the post-holiday blues. Additionally, they are a method of putting your emotions into a project as well as a memory aid and reminiscence driver in the future. Furthermore, in addition to all that, they are simply good fun and very, very beautiful in their own right. So, even if you aren’t in a good head space, a temperature blanket will definitely put you there.

Temperature Blanket

To begin with, here is one based on the Circles in Squares Solid Grannies pattern. Overall, this pattern is particularly good for this application because of the discrete and button-like squares that capture each discrete moment.

Next, instead of stripes, circles and gradients, perhaps it’s time for some hexagond. To this end here is a temperature blanket made of small, regular hexagons. Indeed this one is perfect, because the hexes can be added as needed – an ever-growing emotional barometer. Moreover, each one is color adjustable and fun.

Interlocking Circles Temperature Blanket

Finally, and in a totally different vein, here is a project that can be used as a stand alone emotion indicator, but can also be incorporated in a larger project as well. Moreover, the overlayed circles are very reminiscent of a chain or perhaps knotwork. This project thus has a wonderful texture, in addition to its appearance. While the pattern is not in English, there is a handful of photos and graphs and the project itself is quite easy to follow.

T’is the season to wrap up!

While the summer and nice part of the fall are over, we crocheters know how to keep toasty and warm. Indeed, warm, chunky blankets are just about the very meaning of crocheting. Without a doubt, their thickness, bulk and drape are an ideal combination with their warmth. Consequently, they are the absolute definition of comfort and coziness. Overall, I can’t imagine anything better than a thick, chunky blanket and an evening in front of the fireplace watching “caveman TV”. Here are some particularly fine examples of blanketful chunk.

Chunky Icelandic Blanket

First, this chunky blanket is just about the best example of the type. After all, it is based on designs that are from one of the coldest places on Earth. Besides this, it’s simply a stunning piece and will make a great gift.

The devil is in the details
Since the Fall is the best time to take on crochet challenges, then if you would like to be adventurous you should try one of these patterns. Of course, you are, and you should! However, you may be justified in thinking that squares are just not the right thing for a challenge. That said, you would be wrong and here are some detailed square ideas to prove it. Overall, these are challenging, fun and intricate projects that are little masterpieces on their on. On the other hand, you can also work them into a larger project to really make it pop.
