Crocheting can be both fun and relaxing, and learning the basic stitches is a great way to get started. You will be surprised how many projects you can make knowing only 2 crochet stitches! Below, I will give you a full overview of the needed crochet stitches and show you how to start.

Same as for any new skill, crocheting needs practice, but I know that repeating stitches just for the sake of repeating them is boring! I’m convinced that many amateurs and crochet enthusiasts have died from boredom at that point… What a pity, eh? So, after each stitch, I will give you examples of full projects you can make using only that stitch. So let’s get started!

To start your crochet journey, you will need:

 • a crochet hook (medium size, e.g. 4 mm G-6 will be perfect)
 • yarn (Here let me interrupt: each yarn has it’s own a recommended hook size, but anything which looks like a typical yarn size to you will be good to go).

What are the Basic Crochet Stitches?

Basic Crochet Stitches are the ones you’ll start when learning how to crochet. Here are some of the fundamental crochet stitches:

 1. Chain Stitch (ch): This is the foundation of most crochet projects
 2. Slip Stitch (sl st): This is used for joining or moving within a project
 3. Single Crochet (sc): basic stitch, used in many crochet projects
 4. Half Double Crochet (hdc): Taller than a single crochet, but shorter than a double crochet
 5. Double Crochet (dc): a versatile stitch, taller than single crochet (SC)
 6. Treble (or Triple) Crochet (tr): an even taller stitch used for airy, open patterns

These basic stitches can be combined and modified to create a wide variety of textures and patterns in your crochet projects. Among the easy crochet stitches the most common ones are the single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet stitches, which form the foundation of many projects. These basic stitches are easy to learn and perfect for beginners looking to build their crochet skills. Additionally, more advance stitches are based on those 6 basic stitches.

Practice them on real projects! Below each stitch, you will find a few patterns especially selected to your level which uses only stitches you have already known!

Chain Stitch (CH)

The foundation of most crochet projects. Almost anything crocheted starts with a foundation chain. We make a chain stitch matching a desired length (e.g. blankets) or width (e.g. tops, hats) of our project.

Step 1: To start a chain stitch, first we have to secure the yarn on the hook. To do that, make a slip knot:

If you feel it’s too difficult, follow the video tutorial how to make a slip stitch.

Step 2: Now, you create a chain by making a loop with the yarn and pulling the yarn through the loop. See the photo tutorial below:

Step 3: Continue repeating step 2 to make a chain of the desired length.

If you find it too difficult, try again with the video tutorial.

Tip(s) for Making a Perfect Chain Stitch

To make an ideally looking chain, all loops should have the same size. To achieve that, try to maintain the consistent tension of the yarn. Don’t worry too much now, it will come instinctually with the practise.

How do I join a chain stitch to create a round or circular project?

To turn a chain in the loop, insert your hook in the first stitch (slip knot) and make a slip stitch there. This will form a continuous loop, and you can work from there.

I leant how to crochet a chain stitch. What to do next?

As I promised, no more dull repeating stitches. To practise a chain stitch can start one of the projects listed below….

OR

A chain stitch is the base of other simple stitches, so to practise it, the best way is to start to learn next stitch: a single crochet, double crochet, or half double crochet.

Bracelets are one of the best beginner crochet projects. You only need to know basic crochet stitches to create a unique piece of jewelry for yourself or for a friend. Also, because these friendship bracelets narrow, they don’t require a long time to make.

A crocheted bracelet from a chain stitch or single crochet stitch will be a perfect, fun project for kids to encourage them to learn crocheting. It’s simple and quick to craft, so you will have a gift for a friend or jewelry matching your favorite outfits in no time.

In my post “Basic Crochet Stitches”, I guided you through (surprise!) basic crochet stitches. As I promised, there is no time for dully repeating stitches, like practicing scales in music.

If you have just learned the chain stitch, practice it in your first crochet project: an easy friendship bracelet.

Easy Chain Stitch Friendship Bracelet Free Crochet Pattern

A crocheted bracelet from a chain stitch only will also be a perfect project for kids to encourage them to learn crocheting. It’s a simple, quick project and you will have a gift for a friend or bracelets matching your favourite outfits.

A crocheted friendship bracelet made using the chain stitch will be just the thing to get them to crochet. It’s uncomplicated and fast, but produces amazing accessories for adding pizzazz to any outfit.

Materials you will need:

 • Satin Nylon Cord for the Bracelet; if you don’t have any, use embroidery thread instead
 • Crochet hook – I’ve chosen a 3 mm hook size for my cord
 • Scissors
 • beads (optional)
 • lighter

Step 1: Beginning

Leave approximately 8″ (20 cm) at the beginning. Long tails will help us to block the bracelet at the end while making an adjustable closure. Make a slip knot.

Step 2: Continue with a Chain

Insert the hook and tighten the knot a bit. Make a chain by grabbing the cord over the hook and pulling it through the loop. Continue to crochet chains until your chain measures approximately 5″ (12-13 cm). The chains wrapped around your wrist should cover 3/4 of your wrist to leave a space for an adjustable closure. The number of chains will depend on the yarn or cord you have: I crocheted 20 chains for my bracelet.

Cut the cord leaving approximately 8″ (20 cm) cm, pull the tail end of the cord through the last chain and pull to tie a knot.

Step 3 Finishing off

You can simply tie the bracelet around the wrist when you want an easy version for younger kids. However, I recommend you move one step further and learn how to create an adjustable closure for bracelets. Let’s go!

Grab a PIN:

How to Make an Adjustable Knot for a Bracelet

The adjustable knot we will use is also called a square knot and it’s frequently used in macrame and in bracelets. It allows you to adjust your bracelet to the width of your wrist and easily loosen it when you need to take it off. It’s not complicated when practiced a few times. Using the square knot will need longer tails on your wrist, which are not as pretty as the rest of the bracelet. But, they can easily be made to look great when decorated with small beads.

Before you start, I recommend that you block your bracelet end strands using any box cover and clips. It will give them a bit of tension and will be easier for you to tie knots.

How to block a friendship bracelet
An example how to block a friendship bracelet

Start with a Knot

To start with a knot, grab a separate 8″ (20 cm) length of cord. I prefer to use the same color as the main color of the bracelet but feel free to use any color you want. Try different combinations.

Now, tie it around the bracelet tails just to secure the cord.

See these four photos:

Repeat Square Knots

You will have four cords – 2 in the middle (the bracelet cords) and right and left cords for the adjustable knot we’re going to make. Now, carefully follow the following steps:

 1. Take the right cord and place it over the bracelet cords crossing it as you can see in the photo above (an arrow no 1).
 2. Place the left cord over the right cord (please see the blue arrow no 2 for reference).
 3. Continue with the left cord and place it under the bracelet cords (3a) and up through the center of the loop formed by the right cord (3b). Pull the knot tightly.
 4. Now take the left cord and place it over the bracelet cords (4).
 5. Place the right cord over the left cord (5a), beneath the bracelet cords (5b), and through the loop formed by the left cord (5b).
 6. Pull the knot tightly.
 7. Repeat a few times, each time follow the steps above in the opposite direction. Doing it alternately by changing directions is a key feature of this design.

Finishing off

Now you can cut the square knot ends leaving 3 mm length. Using a lighter, light the ends for a very short period just to make the ends sticky.
Check whether a square knot is centralized on the back of the bracelet. Widen your bracelet and put it on your or your friend’s wrist to check the optimal length. You can add small beads on the ends to complete the design, but it’s optional. Make a small knot in the end, and cut the string.

Single Crochet Friendship Bracelet Free Pattern

A single crochet stitch bracelet will be a perfect project for newbies to introduce them into crocheting.

Two crochet hook tools, two friendship bracelets (one blue, one pink), pink pegs, pearl beads, and gold-colored scissors are arranged on a gray surface.

Materials you will need:

 • 1 mm Nylon or Cotton Cord for the Bracelet
 • 2.5 mm Crochet Hook

or

 • 1.5 mm Nylon Cord
 • 3 mm – 4 mm Crochet Hook

 • Scissors
 • a box lid
 • 2 clips
 • beads (optional)
 • lighter
A hand wears a pink braided friendship bracelet with scissors, a pink tool, and a teal bracelet nearby on a table.

Beginning

Leave approximately 8″ (20 cm) at the beginning. Long tails will help us to block the bracelet at the end while making an adjustable closure. Make a slip knot. Insert a crochet hook and pull a cord to tighten the knot.

Make a chain by grabbing the cord over the hook and pulling it through the loop. Repeat to have 3 chains in total.

Row 1

Insert the hook under the 2nd chain from the hook, yarn over and pull the hook through. Yarn over and pull through the loops on the hook making the first single crochet. Insert the hook under the next string of yarn – it’s not a chain, it’s a bump at the end of the row.

(See photo below – the point at which to make the 2nd chain is designated with a red stitch marker).

A three-panel image showing a crochet process: a yellow crochet hook and pink yarn in a loop, yarn being pulled through the loop, and partial crochet work with a red stitch marker, reminiscent of the intricate patterns seen in friendship bracelets.

Make a 2nd single crochet and turn over.

Next Rows

Continue to make the next rows of 2 single crochets until the bracelet reaches the desired length. Measure the length of the crocheted part of the bracelet around your wrist. It should cover about ¾ of the circumference.

When you reach the desired length, make only 1 chain in the next row instead of two to center the cord in the middle of the bracelet. Yarn over and pull through to make a knot. Tighten the knot and cut the end leaving approximately 20 cm of the cord.

Come back to the first end. To make the end tighten more, insert the hook into the middle of the first row, yarn over and pull through.

Making a Clousure

Continue by tieing the bracelet around the wrist or by making the adjustable square knot for bracelets. See the previous accapit for the instructions how to make the Adjustable Knot.

Finishing off

After making the adjustable knot for the closure, put the bracelet on your wrist. Now take it off to see how long the cords should be to allow you to take the bracelet off comfortably. Keeping this in mind, make knots at the end of the cords. Cut the rest of the cord leaving 2 mm. Melt the ends using the lighter to prevent the ends from unravelling.

Double Crochet Bracelet Free Pattern

A hand adorned with two crocheted friendship bracelets, featuring large pearls—one green and one pink—and surrounded by decorative items.

Materials you will need:

 • 0.80 or 1 mm Nylon or Cotton Cord for the Bracelet
 • 2.0 mm Crochet Hook
 • Scissors
 • a box lid (optional)
 • 2 clips (optional)
 • a button (optional)
 • lighter (optional)
Two woven friendship bracelets, one teal and one pink, are displayed on a white surface with assorted beads and a floral button.

Double Crochet Friendship Bracelet with a Button (a Peach One):

Leave approximately 4″ (10 cm) of a cord at the beginning. Make a slip knot. Insert a crochet hook and pull a cord to tighten the knot.

Make a chain by grabbing the cord over the hook and pulling it through the loop. Repeat to make the chain the same length as your wrist.

I made 35 chains for the kid’s size bracelets. Make CH 3 more and DC into the 7th chain from the hook. The chains at the end will be the buttonhole, so try the button you have to see if it fits.

Continue to make dc to the end of the row, but stop before the last chain. Chain 1.

Add the button: Pull the yarn’s ending through the button’s holes and tie the end to secure it.

Cut the rest of the cord, leaving 2 mm at the end. Use the lighter to melt the ends to prevent them from unraveling.

Double Crochet Friendship Bracelet with an Adjustable Knot (a Green One):

Beginning:

Leave approximately 8″ (20 cm) at the beginning. Long tails will help us block the bracelet at the end while making an adjustable closure. Make a slip knot. CH 33. (As this bracelet is adjustable, it should fit both adults’ and kids’ wrists).

DC into 4th chain from the hook.

Continue to make dc to the end of the row, but stop before the last chain.

Orange crocheted bracelet with a button, golden embroidery scissors, a yellow crochet hook, and a teal crochet piece on a textured gray surface; this charming friendship bracelet is perfect for showcasing your crafty skills.

Chain 1. Slip stitch into the first chain of the round and pull through the 2 cord endings—the cord end from the beginning and the working end of a cord. Cut the cord, leaving approximately 20 cm of tail.

Making the Closure:

Cut 16″ (40 cm) of the cord, fold it in half, insert it into the opposite end of the bracelet, and put the ends into the middle of the hole.

A container with teal yarn clamped inside forms a crochet pattern. Scissors and a red friendship bracelet with a round decoration are placed beside it on the flat surface.

Continue by tying the bracelet around the wrist or by making an adjustable square knot for the bracelet. See the previous paragraph for the instructions on how to make the Adjustable Knot. The only difference is that your bracelet will have 4 cords, not 2, but the method is the same.

Finishing Off:

After making the adjustable knot for the closure, put the bracelet on your wrist. Now take it off to see how long the cords should be to allow you to take the bracelet off comfortably. Keeping this in mind, make knots at the ends of the cords. Cut the rest of the cord leaving 2 mm (~3/16″). Melt the ends using the lighter to prevent the ends from unraveling.

Incorporating Different Crochet Stitches

Expand your crochet repertoire by incorporating new stitches into your projects. By learning and mastering stitches like the trinity stitch or the cluster stitch, you can add intricate details and lots of visual interest to your creations. These new stitches will not only enhance your skills but also provide endless possibilities for creating beautiful and captivating crochet pieces.

Tips for Learning New Stitches

Learning new crochet stitches can be an exciting way to build your skills and add variety to your projects. Here are some tips to help you master new skills:

1. Start with the Basics

Master Basic Stitches: Ensure you are comfortable with basic stitches like chain (ch), single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), and slip stitch (sl st). These form the foundation of more complex stitches.

2. Use Quality Materials

Appropriate Yarn and Hook: Use a smooth, light-colored yarn and a comfortable crochet hook. This makes it easier to see your stitches, work them accurately and adjust as needed.

3. Follow Tutorials

Video Tutorials: Watch step-by-step video tutorials. Visual learning can be very effective for understanding the mechanics of a stitch, as well as learning little tricks and efficiencies..

Written Instructions: Follow detailed written instructions or patterns. Reading through the instructions thoroughly before starting can help you understand the process better.

4. Practice with Swatches

Small Swatches: Practice the new stitch by making small swatches rather than starting a large project. This allows you to focus on getting the stitch right without the pressure of a big project or having to backtrack a lot if something’s not quite right.

Gauge Swatches: For projects requiring specific dimensions, practice making gauge swatches to ensure your tension matches the pattern requirements.

5. Take It Slow

Patience: Take your time and work slowly. New stitches can be challenging, and it’s important to be patient with yourself.

Repeat: Repeat the stitch multiple times until it becomes comfortable and consistent. Repeatability of your stitches is the key to consistent and even projects.

6. Use Stitch Markers

Mark Your Place: Use stitch markers to mark important points in your work, such as the beginning of a round or specific stitch patterns. This helps you keep track of your progress and ensures accuracy.

7. Count Your Stitches

Regular Counting: Regularly count your stitches and rows to ensure you’re following the pattern correctly. This helps prevent mistakes that can be difficult to fix later, when they get blocked in by a large number of following stitches.

8. Practice Consistent Tension

Even Tension: Focus on maintaining consistent tension in your stitches. This helps ensure that your stitches are uniform and your project looks neat.

9. Learn the Stitch Anatomy

Understand Structure: Learn the structure of the stitch you’re trying to master. Understanding how each part of the stitch is formed can help you troubleshoot and master it. Also, when you understand the stitches’ structure, it will be much easier for you to follow diagrams in the future.

10. Use Practice Patterns

Practice Patterns: Use practice patterns specifically designed for learning new stitches. These patterns often include detailed instructions and tips.

By following these tips, you can effectively learn and master new crochet stitches, enhancing your skills and adding more variety to your projects. Happy crocheting!

If you can think of one handmade item which is THE essence of crochet, it will definitely be a granny square blanket.

Crocheting a granny square blanket is a timeless and rewarding craft that has been passed down through generations. Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a new project, this is a delightful journey that results in a cozy and beautiful finished product. Let our guide walk you through the step-by-step process of crocheting your own granny square blanket. We’re certain this will be a lifelong love for you.

Types of Granny Square Blankets:

Granny square blankets come in various styles and designs, each offering a unique aesthetic appeal. Here are some of the most popular types of granny square blankets:

1. Traditional Granny Square Throw Blanket

This classic style features traditional granny squares encompassing clusters of double crochets separated by chain spaces. These squares are typically joined together to create a larger blanket. Traditional granny square blankets often use a mix of colors for a vibrant and playful look. In this, they can be like patchwork.

If you are a granny square newbie, before starting this blanket, learn how to make a classic granny square from the double crochet dc stitch:

2. Solid Granny Square Blanket

In contrast to the traditional style, solid granny square blankets use the same color for each square. The resulting blankets are more uniform and cohesive. They can feature solid-colored squares or variations in shades of the same color for added depth and visual appeal. For the really adventurous, you can even lay out images or broader patterns with squares.

If you are a granny square newbie, before starting this blanket, learn how to make a solid granny square:

3. Granny Stripe Blanket

Granny stripe blankets are made by crocheting rows of granny stripes rather than individual squares. Each row consists of clusters of double crochets worked into chain spaces, creating a wavy, striped effect. Granny stripe blankets can be made using a single color or multiple colors for a striped or gradient look.

3. Single Square Granny Blanket

A variation that’s really neat and fun is a granny square blanket made from a single square. Instead of making many granny squares and joining them together, you are making only one, oversize square. You start in the middle of the blanket and add more and more rounds to make your blanket grow to the desired size.

4. Granny Square Afghan:

Afghan-style blankets often feature large, intricate granny square motifs with complex patterns and designs. These blankets may incorporate elements such as flowers, geometric shapes, or textured stitches for added visual interest. And, of course, colors… tons and tons of colors.

What are some easy baby blanket crochet patterns?

A single square blanket made from one square which grows by increasing the row count is the easiest method to make granny blankets. A granny stripe blanket is also a very forgiving pattern that’s easy to follow.

A classic granny square blanket will be perfect for you if you can crochet for a short amount in between other activities, such as while waiting for a bus. You can make squares one-by-one and carry only a small amount of yarn with you at any given time.

How to Crochet a Granny Square Blanket

Step 1: Decide which type of a blanket you will make

The Granny Stripe Blanket and a single square Granny Square Blanket don’t require joining squares, so they should be made relatively easier than blankets made from many traditional or solid granny squares.

A collage demonstrating different crochet patterns for granny square blankets with instructional titles.

Step 2: Decide the size and shape

Decide the size and shape you will make. If you wish to make a rectangular blanket, it will be easier to make from rectangles or granny stripes. The finished size is easiest to adjust using a granny stripe pattern.

In blankets made of combined granny squares, the size will be determined by the size of the individual squares. Thus the total length of each side will be a multiple of the square size.

A standard size for a granny square is typically around 6-8 rounds, but you can make yours larger or smaller depending on your preference.

If you are making a square baby blanket, a granny square blanket (type 3) made from one square will be the easiest project to make.

Step 3: Gather all the materials

Before we dive into the crocheting process, you’ll need:

 • Yarn: Choose your favorite yarn in the colors of your choice. You can opt for a single color or multiple colors for a more vibrant look. Any worsted weight yarn will be a good yarn to start with.
 • If you are planning to design your own pattern (e.g. from yarn you already have, you can use on-line tools to help you with the design. I described those tools in my previous post – granny square color generators).
 • Crochet Hook: Select a crochet hook that corresponds to the weight of your yarn. A size H/8 (5.00mm) hook is commonly used for medium weight yarn.
 • Scissors: A good pair of scissors is essential for cutting yarn and weaving in ends.
 • Tapestry Needle: You’ll need a yarn needle for weaving in loose ends and joining granny squares.
 • Tape Measure: This will come in handy for ensuring your squares and a blanket are the desired size.

Step 4: Learn the basis

If you have never crocheted before, you don’t have to practice many stitches. You can speed up the process and jump to the tutorials on how to make a traditional granny square or how to crochet a solid granny square, according to the pattern chosen.

Step 5: Increase the Size

Once you have made your first square, you are ready to move further. To make the traditional granny square blanket, continue with making all squares needed to get the desired size (as you have calculated it in the step 2).

If you have chose the single granny square method, continue adding rounds to your granny square, increasing the number of clusters and chain spaces with each round. You can stop increasing when your granny square reaches the desired size.

Step 6: Joining Granny Squares (Optional)

If you’re making a blanket composed of multiple granny squares, you can join them together using various methods such as single crochet, slip stitch, or whip stitch. Experiment with different joining techniques to find the one you prefer. Different projects will work best with different joining methods. Experiment with all of them!

Step 7: Adding the Border (Optional)

You can finish your blanket with a row of a single crochets.

Step 8: Finish Off

Once your granny square reaches the desired size, fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends using a yarn needle.

Conclusion:

Crocheting a granny square blanket is a delightful and fulfilling project that allows you to unleash your creativity. At the same time you get the satisfaction of producing a cozy and timeless piece. Whether you’re making it for yourself, a loved one, or as a gift, the process of crocheting a granny square blanket is sure to bring joy and fulfillment. So, gather your materials, follow these simple steps, and embark on a journey of creativity and warmth!

There’s something undeniably delightful about a fluffy pom pom. Whether adorning hats, scarves, or even acting as decorative pieces on their own, they add a touch of whimsy to any craft project. If you’re here, you’re likely keen to discover how to make a pom pom with yarn. Let’s dive into this fun and easy project.

Materials You’ll Need

 • Yarn: Any type or color will do, but thicker yarns generally result in fluffier pom poms.
 • Scissors: A sharp pair for clean cuts.
 • Cardboard: To make your pom pom templates.
 • Pen & Ruler: For marking and measuring the cardboard.
 • Circular Objects: Like a cup or a lid, to trace circles onto the cardboard.

The Basic Steps to Pom Pom Creation

 1. Making Your Cardboard Templates
 • Trace two identical circles onto your cardboard using your circular object. The diameter of these circles will dictate the size of your pom pom, so choose accordingly.
 • In the center of each circle, draw and cut out a smaller circle, creating two doughnut shapes.
 1. Begin Wrapping the Yarn
 • Hold both pieces of cardboard together, ensuring they’re aligned.
 • Start wrapping your yarn around the cardboard, passing it through the center hole and around the outer edge.
 • The more yarn you wrap, the denser and fluffier your pom pom will be. So, wrap generously!
 1. Cutting the Yarn
 • Once you’re satisfied with the amount of yarn wrapped around your cardboard, take your scissors and slide them between the two pieces of cardboard. Start cutting the yarn along the outer edge of the doughnut.
 • Be sure to hold onto the center part of your wrapped yarn, so it doesn’t unravel.
 1. Securing the Pom Pom
 • After cutting all the way around, you’ll need to secure the pom pom. Take a separate piece of yarn (about 12 inches long) and slide it between the two cardboard pieces.
 • Tie this piece of yarn tightly around the center of your cut yarn. This will hold all the strands together. Make sure to knot it securely, so it doesn’t come apart.
 1. Remove Cardboard and Shape
 • Carefully remove the cardboard pieces from each side of the pom pom.
 • You’ll likely notice your pom pom might look a bit irregular. Using your scissors, trim the yarn until you achieve a spherical shape and desired look.

Tips for Perfect Pom Poms

 • Uniform Wrapping: Ensure that you wrap the yarn uniformly across the entire cardboard template for a symmetrical pom pom.
 • Consistent Cutting: When cutting the yarn in step 3, ensure you’re cutting consistently to avoid an uneven pom pom.
 • Tight Center Knot: The tighter you tie the center knot, the more secure and dense your pom pom will be.

Uses for Your Handmade Pom Poms

 • Hats and Scarves: Attach to the top of hats or the ends of scarves for a playful touch.
 • Gift Wrapping: Use as a unique embellishment for gift packaging.
 • Home Decor: String together for a decorative garland or use as curtain tie-backs.

Taking Your Pom Pom Skills to the Next Level

Now that you have the basic technique down pat, it’s time to explore the diverse world of pom poms and how you can innovate with them.

 1. Multi-Colored Pom Poms

Why settle for a single shade when you can have a burst of colors?

 • Begin by choosing two or more yarn colors. As you wrap the yarn around your cardboard template, alternate between the colors.
 • The result will be a multi-colored, vibrant pom pom that stands out.
 1. Different Sized Pom Poms

Depending on your project, you might need various sizes of pom poms.

 • Use larger circular objects like plates or bowls for bigger pom poms. For mini pom poms, smaller objects like coins can be your go-to.
 • Create an assortment and use them together in projects for a varied, textured look.
 1. Creating Patterns

With a bit of planning, you can design pom poms with specific patterns.

 • For example, if you want a pom pom with a striped pattern, wrap one color of yarn several times, then switch to a second color and continue wrapping. Repeat this process until you’re satisfied with the thickness.
 1. Crafting with Pom Poms

Apart from the usual uses, consider:

 • Pom Pom Rugs: Arrange your handmade pom poms close together and sew or glue them onto a fabric base for a unique, soft rug.
 • Pom Pom Jewelry: Mini pom poms can be turned into vibrant earrings or necklaces.
 • Pom Pom Bookmarks: Attach a pom pom to a long piece of yarn or ribbon for a playful bookmark.

 • Crochet Hook: A size suitable for your yarn weight. If uncertain, yarn labels often provide hook recommendations.
 • Stitch Markers: Helpful for keeping track, especially when starting.
 • Scissors: For cutting the yarn.
 • Tapestry Needle: To weave in ends.

The Basics of Corner to Corner Crochet

C2C crocheting is all about creating “tiles” or “blocks.” Each block represents one pixel in a larger image or pattern.

 1. Making the First Block
 • Start with 6 chains.
 • Perform a double crochet (dc) in the fourth chain from the hook.
 • Then, dc in the next two chains.
 • This forms your first block.
 1. Increasing

To expand your work, you’ll need to understand how to increase.

 • Turn your work.
 • Chain 6. This begins your next block.
 • Perform a dc in the fourth chain from the hook and then in the next two chains.
 • Now, you’ve created a block sitting next to your original. To connect them, slip stitch into the space left by the initial chain 3 of your first block.
 • Chain 3 (this counts as your first dc) and create 3 dc into the same space. Now, you’ve just completed another block and increased your work by one row.
 1. Decreasing (To Shape Your Work)

Once you’ve reached the desired width, you’ll need to decrease to shape your project.

 • Turn your work.
 • Instead of the usual chain 6, slip stitch across the first three stitches.
 • Slip stitch into the space left by the chain 3 of the previous block.
 • Chain 3 (counts as first dc) and then make 3 dc into the same space. This creates a block without increasing the width.
 1. Changing Colors (For Pixel Patterns)

If you’re creating a pixelated image or pattern, changing colors seamlessly is crucial.

 • When you’re two loops away from completing a dc, instead of finishing the stitch with your current color, drop it.
 • Yarn over with your new color and pull it through. This changes the color without any visible knots.

Tips to Perfect Your C2C Technique

 • Tension is Key: Maintaining consistent tension ensures your blocks are uniform, leading to a neater finished project.
 • Practice: Before diving into a big project, create small swatches. This will help you understand increases and decreases without getting overwhelmed.
 • Pixelate Your Design: There are online tools available that can help pixelate images. This helps in planning out your design in advance.

Applications of C2C Crocheting

The versatility of corner to corner crochet is what makes it so beloved among crafters.

 • Blankets: One of the most popular projects. Pixelated images or patterns look stunning spread across a bed or sofa.
 • Scarves and Shawls: These can showcase gradient designs or even specific pixelated images.
 • Pillow Covers: Brighten up any space with a custom-made C2C crochet pillow cover.

Advanced Corner to Corner Techniques

As you become comfortable with the basics of C2C crocheting, you might be eager to explore more advanced techniques to further enrich your projects.

 1. Textured Blocks

Rather than the standard blocks, you can introduce textures.

 • Consider using stitches like the popcorn stitch or the bobble stitch in lieu of standard double crochets to give your blocks a 3D texture.
 • This technique can add depth to your designs, making them pop in an entirely new way.
 1. Combining Techniques
 • C2C doesn’t have to stand alone. Try integrating other crochet techniques, like lacework or even some Tunisian crochet sections, to create projects that combine the best of multiple worlds.
 • Borders, especially, can benefit from this fusion. A delicate lace border on a pixelated C2C blanket can be a stunning juxtaposition.
 1. Crafting Smaller Projects
 • While blankets and shawls are popular C2C projects, think smaller too. Consider crafting coasters, pouches, or even wall hangings.
 • These mini-projects are not only quicker to complete but also offer instant gratification and make for personalized gifts.

Enjoy C2C from the Beginning

Corner to corner crochet is a dynamic, engaging technique that opens up a realm of possibilities for visual storytelling through yarn. While the method might seem intricate initially, with practice, it becomes a rhythmic dance of creation. If you’re keen on trying more advanced designs or different patterns, there are numerous free crochet patterns available online, tailored for the C2C method. Dive deep into this technique, and soon enough, you’ll be transforming yarn into pixelated masterpieces.

The world of crocheting offers myriad stitches, each adding its own unique texture and design to a project. Among them, the crochet waffle stitch stands out with its enticing three-dimensional texture that’s reminiscent of breakfast waffles. For those looking to elevate their crocheting game, this stitch is both a fun challenge and a versatile addition to your repertoire.

The Allure of the Waffle Stitch

Before diving into the ‘how-to’, let’s understand what makes the crochet waffle stitch so popular:

 • Texture & Depth: The design creates deep squares, providing a plush texture that’s soft to touch.
 • Versatility: It can be used for various projects – from blankets to dishcloths, scarves, and beyond.
 • Visually Striking: Its distinct pattern ensures that any item made with this stitch becomes an immediate conversation starter.

Materials You Will Need

Before you embark on this crocheting journey, ensure you have the following:

 • Yarn: Any type of yarn is suitable. However, for beginners, using a medium weight yarn can be easier.
 • Crochet Hook: The size will depend on the yarn. For medium weight yarn, a size H-8 (5mm) is a good choice.
 • Scissors: For trimming the ends.
 • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in the ends.

Mastering the Basics

Before attempting the waffle stitch, ensure you are comfortable with the basic crochet stitches, namely:

 • Chain (ch): The foundation of most crochet projects.
 • Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch that provides height and a bit of openness to the fabric.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Crochet Waffle Stitch

Let’s break down the process step by step:

 1. Foundation Row

Start by making a foundation chain. For the waffle stitch, the number of chains needs to be a multiple of 3, plus an additional 6 chains. For example, you could chain 21 (3 x 7) and then add 6 more chains for a total of 27.

 1. Row 1
 • Double crochet into the third chain from the hook.
 • Double crochet across the entire row.
 1. Row 2 (Starting the Waffle Pattern)
 • Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
 • Make a double crochet in the next stitch.
 • The next stitch is where the waffle pattern starts: Front post double crochet (FPDC) around the next stitch. If you’re unfamiliar with FPDC, it involves yarning over, inserting the hook from the front to the back around the post of the next stitch, yarning over again, and completing the double crochet.
 • Follow this by making two regular double crochets.
 • Repeat the pattern across: FPDC, dc, dc.
 1. Row 3
 • Chain 3.
 • Make two double crochets.
 • Next, make a FPDC around the next stitch (which was the regular dc in the row below).
 • Continue the pattern: dc, dc, FPDC.
 1. Continue the Pattern

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until you reach your desired size.

Tips & Tricks

 • Consistent Tension: Ensure your stitches have consistent tension for an even waffle texture.
 • Counting: As you progress, it might be helpful to count your stitches every few rows to ensure you haven’t missed any.
 • End on the Right Row: For symmetry, try to end your project on the same type of row as you started.

Variations of the Waffle Stitch

 • The crochet waffle stitch, while beautiful on its own, can be customized in myriad ways to add your unique touch:

Color Play

One of the easiest ways to modify the look of your waffle stitch project is by playing with colors. Consider using:

 • Alternating Colors: Switch yarn colors every two rows to create a striped waffle effect.
 • Ombre Effect: Gradually transition from one color to another over several rows to achieve a soft gradient.

Mixing Stitch Sizes

While the traditional waffle stitch uses the double crochet, you can experiment with:

 • Extended Double Crochet (EDC): This stitch provides more height than a regular double crochet, giving a stretched appearance to the waffles.
 • Half Double Crochet (HDC): It’s shorter than the double crochet, offering a compacted waffle appearance.

Adding Borders

 • Borders can enhance the look of your finished product. Some suggestions are:
 • Simple Single Crochet (SC) Border: Provides a neat finishing touch.
 • Picot Edge: Offers a decorative finish to your project.
 • Fringe: Especially if you’re making a scarf or a blanket, adding a fringe can elevate the style quotient.

Try this Technique Now!

With patience and practice, the crochet waffle stitch will soon become second nature. As you master this stitch, the doors to numerous beautiful projects swing wide open. Looking to experiment further? There are plenty of free crochet patterns available online that can guide you in creating everything from cozy blankets to stylish accessories using the waffle stitch. Happy crocheting!

Tunisian crochet, a unique blend of traditional crochet and knitting, offers crafters a versatile and textured approach to creating stunning projects. If you’re new to crocheting and eager to explore this art or an experienced crafter looking to expand your skills, this guide will walk you through the fundamentals of Tunisian crochet’s basic stitches. From the Tunisian Simple Stitch to the Tunisian Purl Stitch, you’ll learn the techniques to embark on your creative journey.

What Is Tunisian Crochet?

Tunisian crochet, also known as Afghan crochet or Tricot crochet, is distinct from traditional crochet due to its use of an elongated hook that resembles a hybrid between a crochet hook and a knitting needle. This tool allows you to work through stitches that are left on the hook, resulting in a fabric that shares characteristics with both crochet and knitting.

Tools You’ll Need

Before diving into the stitches, gather the necessary tools:

 • A Tunisian crochet hook with a comfortable grip. These hooks are longer than standard crochet hooks.
 • Essentials for weaving in ends and finishing your project.
 • A pair of scissors to cut the yarn and tidy up your work.

Basic Tunisian Crochet Stitches

 • Tunisian Simple Stitch (TSS)

The Tunisian Simple Stitch forms the foundation of most Tunisian crochet projects. Follow these steps:

 • Create a foundation chain with an even number of stitches. Insert the hook from right to left under the second chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop, leaving it on the hook.
 • Repeat the yarn over and pull up a loop in each chain across the row. Do not turn your work as in traditional crochet.
 • Yarn over and draw through the first loop on the hook. Yarn over again and draw through two loops on the hook. Repeat this step until only one loop remains.
 • Repeat the forward and return passes until your piece reaches the desired length.

The TSS creates a dense and textured fabric, perfect for warm blankets and cozy scarves.

 • Tunisian Knit Stitch (TKS)

The Tunisian Knit Stitch imitates the look of knitted fabric. Here’s how to do it:

 • Similar to TSS, create an even-numbered foundation chain. Insert the hook from left to right through the second chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
 • Yarn over and pull up a loop in each chain across the row.
 • As in TSS, complete the return pass by yarning over and drawing through loops.
 • Alternate between TKS and TSS rows to create a textured pattern.

The TKS results in a fabric with a distinct “V” shape, resembling the appearance of knitted stitches.

 • Tunisian Purl Stitch (TPS)

The Tunisian Purl Stitch adds even more texture to your work, akin to the purl stitch in knitting:

 • Work with an even number of stitches in your foundation chain. Keep the yarn in front of your work and insert the hook from right to left under the second chain. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
 • Maintain the yarn in front while pulling up a loop in each chain across the row.
 • Yarn over and draw through one loop, then yarn over again and draw through two loops at a time until one loop remains.
 • Alternate between TPS and TSS or TKS rows for a fascinating blend of textures.

The TPS forms a bumpy surface, which contrasts beautifully with smoother stitches.

Tips for Success

 • Pay attention to your tension. Avoid pulling too tightly, as it may hinder the hook’s movement.
 • Different yarn weights and textures create diverse results. Play with various yarns to explore the stitch textures fully.
 • Begin with a simple project like a dishcloth or a scarf to practice these stitches before advancing to more complex creations.
 • Blocking your finished piece helps even out the stitches and gives your project a polished look.
 • As you advance, you’ll encounter Tunisian crochet patterns with abbreviations. Familiarize yourself with these to navigate patterns effectively.

Embark on Your Tunisian Crochet Journey

Tunisian crochet opens the door to a world of creativity, allowing you to craft intricate textures and designs. By mastering these basic stitches – the Tunisian Simple Stitch, Tunisian Knit Stitch, and Tunisian Purl Stitch – you’ve laid the foundation for countless projects. From cozy blankets to stylish garments, let your newfound knowledge guide you as you embark on your Tunisian crochet journey. Remember, practice and patience are key to honing your skills and creating masterpieces that showcase the beauty of Tunisian crochet.

Have you ever heard about the bullion stitch?

If not so much, you are in the right place! The bullion stitch is a very decorative 3D technique which is not widely popular, but definitely worth trying. I consider it one of the hidden gems among stitches.

A bullion stitch is essentially a cluster of loops which looks like wrapped rope. It’s very visually appealing and will make a unique accent for your project.

What can a bullion stich be used for?

Bullion stich can be used as an accent, such as an accent row in a blanket or they can be grouped together to create intricate designs. You can also use it to crochet flowers or any textured patterns.

Is the bullion stitch hard to learn?

A bullion stitch is relatively easy to make, although it can be a bit tricky at times. It definitely requires good tension control. While you master it, you can use it to add a beautiful touch to any of your ongoing crochet projects. Below, you will find a tutorial how to make it and many examples of how versatile it is and beautiful textures it can create.

How to Slip Stitch in Crochet

Slip stitch (sl st) is one of the basic crochet stitches each crocheter should know. Slip stitch is the shortest of the stitches. I would say it is an even easier one! You can use it for:

 • Make a simple border for your crochet item
 • joining rounds
 • Add decorative elements on the surface of your crochet item (surface crochet)
 • joining crochet elements together (e.g. squares)

Below you will learn step by step, how to do a slip stitch in crochet for each of those uses.

How to Slip Stitch Edging to Your Crochet Project

There is not any particular moment for stating a slip stitch. You can work on it at any point in your project. However, if you planning to introduce a new color and make an edge with it, it’s better to wait until the end of the row and add a new yarn at the last loop of the previous row.

Step 1

Finish your row according to the pattern, stopping just before the last yarn is over.

Remove the crochet hook. Make a loop of a yarn you what to work with. Insert the hook into the place you want to begin with. Yarn over and pull through all loops (including a loop on the hook).

Slip stitch on the edging step 1
Step 2

Insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull through. You have two loops on the hook (in my example they are green). Pull over the loop closed to the head through the second loop. Do not yarn over.

Slip stitch on the edging step 2

Step 3

Repeat step 2 to finish the row of slip stitches.

Slip stitch on the edging step 3

Joining a Crochet Round

You can also use slip stitches to join the first and the last stitch in the round when crocheting a circle e.g. a magic ring. To do this, insert the hook under the top two loops of the first stitch of this round, yarn over, and pull through.

Slip stitch in a magic ring

PRO TIP: If you’re following a pattern for an amigurumi, a pattern may require to skip stitch. Follow the pattern or make the next single crochet stitch to start the second round instead.

Adding a Decorative Elements) Surface crochet)

You can add decorative elements to any crocheted or knitted project using this technique.

Slip stitch on the surface

Step 1: To work slip stitch on the surface make a slip knot from the yarn you would be working with.
Step 2: Insert a hook into the place you want to start and place a slip knot on the hook. Pull it through on the surface.
Step 3: Insert a hook into the next space in between stitches or rows depending on the shape you want to surface.

TIP: If you making a shape, cut it out of the paper first and pin it in the desired place. Next slip a stitch around it.

Joining Crocheted Elements Together With Slip Stitch

Slip stitches are great for joining elements together. You can use it to join granny squares while making a bedspread or to stitch up the sleeves on a sweater.
When joining two pieces, insert your hook through both pieces or edges when you work each slip stitch.

See an example how to join crochet squares.

Crochet stitches are the building blocks of beautiful and intricate designs. In this post, we will introduce you to 5 easy crochet stitches that are perfect for beginners. Whether you’re creating blankets, scarves, or adorable amigurumi, mastering these stitches will elevate your crochet projects to new heights.

Single Crochet Stitch

The single crochet stitch (sc) is one of the most basic and versatile stitches in crochet. It creates a dense and tight fabric, making it ideal for projects like dishcloths or pot holders. We’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of creating the single crochet stitch, ensuring you have a solid foundation for more complex stitches.

Double Crochet Stitch

The double crochet stitch (dc) is slightly taller than the single crochet stitch and is widely used in various crochet projects. Its versatility makes it perfect for blankets, shawls, and garments. You’ll learn how to create the double crochet stitch, including tips on maintaining consistent height and tension.

Half-Double Crochet Stitch

The half-double crochet stitch (hdc) strikes a balance between the single crochet and double crochet stitches. It offers a bit more height than the single crochet while being less tall than the double crochet. This stitch is great for creating scarves, hats, and baby blankets. We’ll walk you through the steps of working the half-double crochet stitch with clarity and precision.

Slip Stitch

The slip stitch (sl st) is the simplest of all crochet stitches. While it may not be used as frequently as other stitches, it serves various purposes, such as joining rounds, creating decorative edges, or fastening off. Understanding how to work the slip stitch will enhance your finishing techniques

Shell Stitch

The shell stitch is a decorative stitch that adds texture and elegance to crochet projects. It consists of multiple stitches worked in the same stitch or space, creating a shell-like motif. This stitch is perfect for creating delicate edging on blankets, scarves, or afghans. We’ll guide you through the steps of creating a shell stitch, allowing you to incorporate this beautiful design element into your crochet repertoire.

How to Crochet a Granny Square https://yourcrochet.com/granny-square/ https://yourcrochet.com/granny-square/#respond Thu, 20 Jul 2023 16:13:38 +0000 https://yourcrochet.com/?p=59483 A granny square is one of the most popular techniques and you will be able to...

The post How to Crochet a Granny Square appeared first on Your Crochet.

]]>

A granny square is one of the most popular techniques and you will be able to quickly learn how to crochet it. The pattern is based on common crochet stitches. And yes, you really can follow this pattern even if you never crocheted before! I will teach you how to make it step-by-step.
After you master the basic granny square, you can then use it to make blankets, scarves, vests and many more different projects 🙂 Best of all, you don’t need a gauge swatch, because the square itself doubles as one as well.

Materials you will need:

 • Yarn of your choice, and you don’t need a whole skein of yarn to get going. A small to medium ball of yarn will do.
 • Crochet hook (read a yarn label for info on which hook size to choose)
 • Scissors
 • Yarn needle (for weaving in ends)

Here’s a step-by-step guide on How to Crochet a Granny Square:

Foundation:

 1. Start with a slip knot on your crochet hook. (I have a slip knot tutorial on YouTube).
 2. Make a foundation ch 4. (To make a chain, wrap the yarn over the hook and catch it with the barb. Pull it through the loop on the hook. Repeat 3 times to get 4 chains in total)
 3. Insert the hook into the 4th chain from the hook. Slip stitch to create a circle. (To slip stitch – wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull it through both loops on the hook).

A series of photos showing how to make a granny square crochet stitch.

Row one:

 1. Ch 3 – yarn over the hook and pull over through the loop. Repeat this 2 times to get 3 chains in total.
 2. Find the center of the circle. Now we will make the first double crochet (dc). How to make a double crochet stitch: wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the circle. Grab the yarn again and pull it through. You have 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull it through the 2 first loops. Yarn over again and pull it through those second 2 loops.
 3. Make one dc more. Our starting 3 ch will count as our first double crochet. So now we have 3 dc crochet stitches starting from the same loop (a cluster). Those stitches create one side of our granny square. Making dc stitches each time insert the hook in the middle of the circle.A series of photos showing how to crochet a granny square with a pink crochet hook.
 4. Chain 3 which crates a corner space of our square.
 5. 3 dc and ch 3 – repeat 3 times to get 4 sides of the square.
 6. To close the first round, insert the hook into the third chain of our starting chains (see step 1). You should catch 2 loops so that you now you have 3 strands of yarn on your hook. Yarn over and pull through. You’ve made a slip stitch (sl st). Now, make a slip stitch into the next dc space and slip stitch into the corner space. We finished the first round of our square.

Four pictures of a granny square stitch with a pink crochet hook.

Round two:

 1. Chain 3.
 2. 3 dc into the corner space of the first round.
 3. Chain 3 and 3 double crochet stitches more in the same corner space.
 4. *Chain 1 and make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the next corner space. Chain 3 and make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into the same corner space. * Repeat this step twice.
 5. Ch 1 and connect with the beginning of the round by making a slip stitch into the third chain of our chain 3 from the beginning of the round. It’s the end of the round 2.

A series of photos showing how to crochet a pink granny square.

Next rounds:

If you want to make the square bigger, follow the steps from Round 2. Slip stitch into a corner space, and start making a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into that corner space, chain 3 and another cluster of 3 double crochet stitches into each corner space. On each side, make a cluster of 3 double crochet stitches on the side space created by chain 1 (in between 3 dcs clusters) from the previous round.

Finish off:

Yarn over and pull through. Cut the yarn end and pull the hook out. Finally, pull the yarn to tighten the knot.

About The Treble Crochet Stitch

A treble crochet stitch in one of the basic crochet stitches. It can also be called triple instead of treble.

Depending on whether you are using UK or US terminology treble crochet has different meanings which can be confusing. A treble stitch in US terminology is referred to as a double treble in the UK. The treble crochet in UK terms means double stitch in the US.

Abbreviation

Patterns can be presented in written form or as a chart.

In written patterns, a treble stitch is abbreviated as (tr).

Chart SymbolTr symbol

In crochet charts, a treble stitch is represented by the symbol:

What is a treble stitch used for?

The treble stitch is very versatile, tall stitch and can give a looser texture to a design than other basic stitches. You can use this stitch for:

 1. creating the main crocheted fabric of a project, such as a blanket, scarf, shawl or another clothing item. By working in rows of treble stitches, you end up with a looser and less closed fabric, with larger gaps between the stitches.
 2. Since the treble stitch is taller, it’s suitable for creating lacy and open patterns. If you combine chains with the treble stitch, you will form intricate designs a delicate, airy texture.
 3. Again, due to their height, unlike other basic crochet stitches like single crochet or half double crochet, treble stitches add height and drape to your projects. They are eminently suitable for garments and decorative pieces like curtains or tablecloths.
 4. Finally, the tall loops of the treble stitch make it possible to vary textures in an interesting way. To create embossed or raised textures, you work front or back post treble stitches. This means that you work it around the post of a previous row’s stitch instead of into the top loops.

Here’s an easy, step-by step tutorial to learn how to crochet the treble stitch :

All you will need is a crochet hook and a yarn.

Step 1

For your foundation chain, start with a slip stitch and a few chain stitches.

Treble stitch photo 1

Step 2

Wrap the yarn twice over the hook.

Tr photo 2

Step 3

Insert the yarn into the fifth chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull a loop through the chain. You should have 4 loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops.

Treble stitch photo 3

Step 4

When you did step 3, three loops should have remained on the hook. Yarn over again and pull it through the first 2 loops again.

Tr 4

Step 5

Now 2 loops remain on the hook. Yarn over and pull through those 2 loops.

Photo 5

Step 6

You have now made one treble stitch (1 tr). Make more stitches to the end of the row by inserting the hook in each 5th chain and repeating steps 1 to step 5. At the end of a row of treble crochet, you should make 4 chains to turn.

How to Make and Use the Single Crochet Stitch

If you are, reading how to learn a single crochet stitch, you have probably just decided to get into crocheting. Good for you! It’s an amazing hobby so don’t wait any further to “start hooking”. Yes, the double entendre is not lost on crocheters and we wear it proudly.

Single crochet is the first stitch to start with and the one stitch you absolutely need to know. It is simple to make and very versatile. It is also one of the most common crochet stitches, if not THE most common. Here are examples of projects you can make using the single crochet stitch:

 1. Hats, scarves and sweaters: single crochet is used everywhere when you want to create a dense fabric, such as in many winter projects
 2. Blankets: you will be able to make a blanket using only a single crochet stitches, and due to the density it will be warm and have a beautiful drape
 3. Amigurumi, which means small stuffed toys
 4. Single crochet is also used in edging and borders for bigger projects. You can practice this stitch to finish off a blanket, dishcloth or any other item that requires a clean edge. Sometimes it’s used to make a denser edge on a lighter and airier project.
 5. Small appliqués and embellishments. You will be able to create small decorative motifs like flowers, and (gasp!) bunnies and kittens that can be sewn onto other projects as a decor.
 6. Single crochet is often used to create small decorative motifs, flowers, or other flourishes that can be sewn onto other crochet or fabric projects.
 7. Combined with other stitches, single crochet creates many more complex textured patterns e.g. cables and ribbing.

I hope these few examples convince you to start practicing immediately.

Abbreviation

Patterns can be presented in written form or as a chart.

In written patterns, a single crochet stitch is abbreviated SC or sc. This is, of course, American terminology.

(In the UK, they use different terminology and it’s called double crochet and abbreviated DC, but let’s stick to the US nomenclature. In the future, check which terminology the pattern uses. For consistency and ease of learning, try to pick patterns with US terminology. Down the line, once you have immersed yourself in the craft, you can look for terminology “dictionaries” to help you translate patterns.

Chart Symbol

In crochet charts, single crochet is represented by an “X” or a “+.”

Finally, let’s get some practice. You will need yarn and a crochet hook.

A Single Crochet tutorial step-by-step

To use single crochet stitches, follow these step-by-step instructions:

 1. Start with a slip knot on your crochet hook. I have described how to tie a slip knot in this tutorial

Single crochet - step 1 Slip stitch

2. Wrap the yarn over the hook and catch it with the barb. Pull it through the loop on the hook. You have just made one chain.

Single crochet step 2

3. Repeat step 2 to make 10 more chains. This will be your foundation chain.

Single crochet Step 3

4. Insert the hook into the second chain from the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook, and pull it through. Now you have 2 loops on the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook again, and pull it through both loops on the hook.

Single crochet step 4

5. There is only one loop that remains on the hook. You have just created one single crochet stitch (1sc). Repeat step 4 in each remaining chain to the end of the row to create row of single crochet stitches.

Single crochet Step 5

TIPS:

 1. When working in crochet rows, add 1 chain at the end of each row. This becomes a turning chain and allows to keep a constant number of stitches in each row. In the tutorial you’ll note that we have 10 chain stitches and 1 turning chain.
 2. To make the first single crochet stitch, insert the hook into the second chain from the hook.
 3. Don’t miss the last chain in a row. It’s a common mistake. To avoid this, count the single crochet stitches in each row. In our example, you should have 10 single crochet stitches in a row.
 4. Try to maintain consistent tension on the yarn all the time. It’s essential for creating even stitches and consequently even projects.
 5. Sometimes, you may find instructions to work in the first chain from the hook. In those cases, you should follow the crochet pattern directions.
 6. A slip stitch is not counted as a chain.

Crocheting a magic loop, also known as a magic ring, a magic circle or adjustable ring, is a technique used to begin crocheting in the round. Learn how to make a magic loop with my crochet tutorial.

Why should you learn how to crochet a magic ring?

A magic loop technique is commonly used for projects like amigurumi, hats and doilies. In short, its perfect for circular or tubular items. That said, you can certainly start any circular project using the chain method, but it just wont give you the same effects.

Only a crochet magic loop will create an ideal circle with invisible holes. Thats why it is popular in amigurumi, because it hides the starting point. It looks nicer and better prevents the inside filling of the toy from spilling outside.

Here’s a step-by-step tutorial on how to use the magic loop method for newbies:

Step 1

Place the tail end (bight) of your yarn in the palm of your hand, with the end at the bottom and the yarn running upwards.

how to make a magic loop crochet tutorial step 1
Magic Ring Step 1

Step 2

Bring the working yarn around the tops of your fingers and cross yarn over the tail end. Secure the yarn with your thumb to stop it from moving and maintain tension.
how to make a magic loop crochet tutorial - Magic Ring Step 2
Magic Ring Step 2

Step 3

After that insert the hook from right to left under the first strand of yarn and over the second strand. Grab the second strand. Make sure to keep the rest of the yarn from moving.

Magic Ring Step 3

Step 4

Pull the yarn underneath the fist strand, simultaneously turning over the hook of 180 degrees.

how to make a magic loop crochet tutorial - Magic Ring Step 4
Magic Ring Step 4

Step 5

Insert the hook under left upper string (it will be the working end of the yarn, which mean the yarn leading to the rest of the ball). Pull the yarn over to make a chain (ch).

Magic Ring Step 5

Step 6

Remove the yarn from your fingers. Then, take the loose end of the yarn off from the loop.

how to make a magic loop crochet tutorial - Magic Ring Step 6
Magic Ring Step 6

Step 7

Wrap the working yarn around your left hand. Make sure your loop is big enough to make a first round of stitches. If not, you can easily adjust it by pulling a working end of the yarn.

Grab the loose end along with your working yarn. Now you are ready to make the first round of stitches into the magic ring.

Magic Ring Step 7
Magic Ring Step 7

The next step depends on the pattern you want to follow. However, all stitches in the first round will be made through the magic loop.

The chain we already made in step 5 counts as the first chain. Further ones will be continued with single crochet.

Step 8

Then, insert the hook into the loop, grab the yarn over (yo) and pull through. Grab the yarn over again and pull through 2 loops. It is our first single crochet (sc) stitch.

Magic Ring step 8
Magic Ring step 8

Step 9

Work more stitches of the first round into the magic loop in accordance with the pattern. I made 8 single crochets ( 8 sc) inserting the hook into the crochet magic loop each time.

Now, it’s time to close the circle. Holding the tail end in your left hand and the rest of the loop in your right hand, pull the tail end to tighten the circle.

Step 9
Step 9

Step 10

Finish the magic circle with a slip stitch (sc). To do that, insert the hook under the top two loops of the first stitch of this round. Yarn over and pull through.

TIP: If you’re following a pattern for an amigurumi, you don’t need to do this slip stitch. Do the next single crochet stitch to start the second round instead.

Magic ring step 10
Magic ring step 10

Step 11

Secure the tail end of the yarn. To do that, take a tapestry needle and work it through.

At last, pull the end again. This will also let you tighten the the ring and make the hole in the centre invisible.

Magic Ring Step 11
Magic Ring Step 11

That’s it! You’ve successfully crocheted a magic ring. Now make a second round following your pattern. Thank you for our time together!

Magic Ring Step 12

It’s time to build your crochet chops. While seasonal projects are all fine and dandy, it’s the general use, staple techniques that make or break the crocheter.

Therefore, it’s always a good idea to learn and practice useful stitches. To this end, here are some borders for C2C blanket projects. C2C is a wonderful way of building up large projects with geometric designs. Overall, even though you do this manually it’s almost a digital way of crocheting. However, these projects need a great finish to be truly complete. This is best done by a great border. Better still, these edges can also match other projects as well, giving you possibility to versify your projects.

Bobble stitch blankets – beauty and texture

Although there are many crochet stitches, few render the amazing combination of texture and beauty that the bobble stitch does. However, it’s quite easy, really, so that even beginners can do this after a short run up.

It’s technique time!

So, it’s time to learn a new technique, the Tunisian Saloniki Stitch. This is a fun and easy technique for making moderately dense and medium-textured blanket and afghan projects. Of course, you can adapt it to other types of projects as well. After all, it’s a very versatile and useful stitch. That said it’s also highly customizable, so you can experiment with colors as well as yarn types and weights. Additionally, it’s simply fun and challenging to do something totally different, such as a new technique to re-interpret some of your favorite projects.

Tunisian Saloniki Stitch

To begin with, here is a project that looks like it’s knitted. Overall, the Tunisian ribbed stitch here uses a Tunsian simple stitch and the Tunisian full stitch to yield a beautiful, almost herringbone effect interspersed with parallel portions.

And here is another varioation of the Tunisian Saloniki Stitch. While the basic technique is the same, it uses an offset to create a discontinuous effect. Thus, this crochet style creates a very soft and cozy afghan, that has a fairly prominent texture of diagonal bands of Saloniki stitching.

Lines, they’re not only in color

So, the cable motif is a wonderful way of enriching the texture of a crocheted surface. Of course, it helps differentiate the base of a project from its decorations. However, it’s also a great design tool in its own right and can make fabulous, complex patterns that will be the focal point of your work. That said, you don’t need to go overboard either, and a simple weave of cables will give your project an elegant Celtic flair or tactile goodness. Moreover, the technique itself is very simple, and you will get the hang of it really quickly and be able to incorporate it into almost any design.

Celtic Tiles Blanket

Speaking of a Celtic flair, this cable motif project is one that incorporates a traditional square-based blanket and cable stitching that imitates Celtic knot work. Overall, I love the tactile aspect of this beautiful blanket.

Although is hot outside, cooler weather will soon prevail.

So, it’s definitely good to start making denser, warmer blankets . Thus, here are some moss stitch and blanket ideas. To summarize, these exhibit a solid texture and resemble a knitted fabric. Thus, with this relatively simple technique, you can achieve some pretty amazing effects, without going to a lot of effort of matching various stitches. Indeed, you can concentrate on the colors and patterning of the surface, without troubling yourself with the texture. After all, the moss stitch takes care of that. The resulting blankets will be dense, luxuriant and consequently absolutely perfect for wrapping up in on a cold evening.

Hydroponic Moss Stitch

This project uses the Madelinetosh yarn in Hydroponic colorway and an Antler colorway border. Should you add the border on just 2 edges, you’ll give it a super modern look.

The “The Feather and the Fan”… sounds like a title of a criminal novel, but that’s the name of one of the most beautiful crochet stitches of all times.

Although the title seems a little 19th century, the feather and fan stitch certainly is modern and contemporary. Moreover, delicate waves combined with a beautiful texture are a recipe for an incredibly beautiful feather and fan stitch blanket or a scarf. Here are some blanket ideas in baby-ish hues together with a free pattern or tutorial which was used to create each item.

Rainbow Feather and Fan Baby Blanket

To begin with, the rainbow pastel colors of Stylecraft Special DK yarn underline the delicacy and beauty of the feather and fan stitch. Consequently, this color combo definitely is a good idea for a baby shower and goes well with any newborn clothes.

Continuing, here is a feather and fan stitch baby blanket using the same techniques. Although, or perhaps because, it is created only with 2 hues of TLC Baby Solid yarn in white and blue-ish Bunny Print, it is simple and elegant. At the same time, it is an outstanding blanket with an intriguing texture.
